Looks like you are missing code somewhere.

Doesn't matter. When you redo it all the site will be down until you upload all of the files. Shouldn't take no more than 5-15 minutes depending on your net connection.

Well yes and no.

I put the site into maintenance mode before saving the files... now looking at the FTP prog to be sure they still exist. Knowing *my* luck I've screwed it :D

You only need to save your db, the setting files and any special images (logos and all), etc. You don't have to save the SMF files or any of the mod files. You are going to be reinstalling those.

As it happens both files are 0 bytes... but beforehand I'd done a full backup of the site. In theory I should be able to restore the site exactly as it was before I started... once I work out how to get the database to import the backup of course.

Even so... I have this feeling that curently all info in the old Settings.php file has gone.

Without the settings file will the member list (and maybe the 'archive') is still going to appear? If so nothing else really matters much?

Should I go ahead and upload the upgrade regardless now??

Even if the files are 0 bytes, you can upload the old ones and run repair_setting.php when you are finished with everything. The setting files hold your db and site url info. Repair_settings.php will correct it if needed. It will also correct most of the url's on your site for SMF.

You member info such as, users, pm's messages, etc. are stored in the database. As long as you don't mess with it you will have the same info. ;)

It's on its way up... but I can't admit to any kind of confidence. I don't think those files were copied properly. Too late now tho! :D

I've done this hundreds of times. I do it do my sites about every 3-6 months just to get rid of the junk and keep things running smoothly.

You should always backup your db once per week and always right before you install any mods or edit any code. The database is the heart of your forum. You lose that and you lose everything. SMF files, etc. can always be replaced but it is a lot harder to remember all of the posts, pm's, etc. that the database had in it.

Also keep copies of older database in case something goes wrong or it get corrupted. At least, you'll have something if you use an older one. You'll lose some info but it will be much better than losing everything.

The database will be ok (I think) it's getting SMF to talk to it if it doesn't know it's there that might be the problem... but we'll see. Right now it's still uploading.

Actually *had* I been doing regular backups of the files I might have had a version where it all worked properly... like I said tho too late now. Tho after 25 years playing with this stuff you'd have thought I'd have learned something so basic by now? :D

I've been messing with PC's for over 20 years and still screw up. We are humans and are prone to making mistakes. But the older you get, the harder it is to remember what mistakes you should not make. LMAO

I hear you!! :)

Even so it was only earlier this year that I finally sorted out a regular backup for my main machine despite losing countless HDD's over the years (including 500Gb of photos - including all those of my daughter in her first 5 years). I signed up with Mozy for online backup. To date I've not needed to reinstall so I have *no* idea what sort of issues might arise if I tried but at least it's all 'somewhere'... !
