IchBin

Have you tried disabling all the blocks and stuff to see if any particular block is causing this?

I did a Firebug Net Monitor on your site and compared it with TP.net and my site (I haven't posted the data from my site, it's similar to TP's) We can use this to show what the load time of each element of a webpage is. I see a lot of: 304 Not Modified, errors.

I have removed a chunk of data, there's hundreds of elements for every complex website.

It might help if you could have a look at the data while making a post.

  • What errors are in the logs? Both SMF's and the Server.
  • Do you ever get redirected to a 403, 400 or any other 4XX error page while posting?
  • Does the same thing happen with the Default Theme?
  • Have you asked SMF for support? Posting in the forum is really their department.

You're welcome. If you have any delays with a page loading, that trick will usually tell you what is holding things up.

Sorry to take so long responding... I came down with a bad cold so just gave up struggling for a couple of days! :)

I *have* asked in the SMF forums and they seem as baffled as everyone else. We don't get any 4xx messages ever... occasionally the database throws a message that the s/w can't connect but we know that is a server issue which is quickly resolved.

The majority of us are using the default theme. Members can currently choose their own.. I just forced everyone to the default but it made no difference. :(

I had a look at the 'Forum Error Logs and I see 29 pages... with varied error messages such as :

Unable to load the 'main' template.
Copyright removed!!
Unable to load the 'wap2_tpdl_main' template.
Unable to verify referring url. Please go back and try again.
Undefined index: num_users_online_today

I've no idea what they means tho.

Actually... I've never seen a server log... and have no idea where to look for any. :)

On of the things that really rattles me is the sheer consistency of the delay. Regardless of time of day of size of post it *always* takes 64 seconds. Is there *anywhere* in the software where a posting delay might be set??

How do I look at the dat whilst making a post? (nontechnical me gets a little lost sometimes)

The delay is probably due to something being read. Whatever it is, it is taking a long time to load. Like I said, I think it has something to do with the ads but if you have uninstalled it there still might be code left. You'll have to check and manually remove it all.

If you have it installed, it is possible that there might be duplicate code. You'll have to remove the extras, if any.

To be quite honest I think I've had enough. I'm seriously considering just abandoning the current configuration, rebuilding the forum on it's 'sister domain' and forcing everyone to rejoin if they wish.

I can open all the template files etc but I haven't a clue what to look for or how to fix it.

Added to which... I had a look at the instructions for cloning and I'm not sure I'm up to the job technically... tho obviously I'll try first. :)

For now I'm going to go away and create installs of SMF and TP then have a stab at shifting the database over... if it works great... if not... well the members are going to have to make the decisions for themselves. :D

Or you can do it the easy way. Backup your DB and any special files you wish to keep. Also, backup settings.php and settings.php.bak. You'll need those.

Download a copy of SMF upgrade for the version you are using. Upload all of the files. This will get rid of all mod code that was added to your smf files. You will keep all of your information since you will do nothing to the database.

Then you'll have to upload the 2 settings files and reinstall your mods and themes. This should get you to have a "new" site but with the same settings, blocks, users, pm's, etc.

You can follow along with my tutorial here but you'll want to start from the section:

"Now, you'll need to create your forum by following the instructions below:"

Hmmm... that sounds like a winner! :)

I just told the membership I'd go off and rebuild but there's nothing to lose by trying this first.

Thanks.

I'll get back with some feedback as soon as :D

Good luck. :)

EDIT: You'll also want to make sure you get updated version for your mods before reinstalling them.
