Taking On The World

Jus this morning I got an email from a very close friend of mine who has been using a forums program of V-bulletins going on almost 2 years now, and he wanted to talk to me about why I went with SMF, so I thought it would be a great idea instead of writing to him I would pick up the phone and give him a call, even if it was 6am in the morning.

Phone Rings:

Rick: Hello

Me: Hey got your email this morning thought I would talk to you instead of writing you.

Rick: Man I was just on my way to bed, had a long night and thought I would get some sleep, had to fix the network last night, some idiot deleted a bunch of files off from the server, and I had to get in and replace them it has been a long night.

Me: Well, if it were me I would send the idiot a pick slip today, and send them walking, or maybe a good kick in the butt would have done the trick.

Rick: (laughs) then I would lose my job, but anyway man, what’s up with you and this SMF deal, I thought I told you that V-bulletins was the best way to go with your forums?  :idiot2:

Me: dang, I don’t even know where to start about this, but man I am telling you, you really need to check out this program, these guys are not messing around, and what makes it even greater it that you can get help if you get stuck with a problem.

Rick: V-bulletins have customer support that is great, I don’t understand what you are getting at, I think you are making a mistake.

Me: (laughs) I don’t think so, you know what happened with nuke right?

Rick: Right.

Me: Well I have had this program running for a few weeks now, and I have not had any real problems with it, not only that, it is a lot easier to use then anything I have tried and you don’t have to do anything out side the program that much, it is all built in.

Rick: Like what?
Me: Well, if they have an update, all you have to do is upload it to your ftp which is done inside the program, it knows where to put everything and all you have to do is hit install and your done, that’s it, and if you want to add a new theme for the program you can do that same thing, you don’t even have to unzip anything. Just down load the file and upload it through there.

Rick: I have heard of something like that before, I wouldn’t trust it though, you never know what files you are really getting. I like to see what is being installed on my server.  :uglystupid2:

Me: I don’t think I am going to worry about that, because everything I download is from their site, so you can bet that everything is checked out before it is released.

Rick: True

Me: I don’t know, but I think that these guys are going to have something good here, someone has really planned this whole thing out pretty well, and I think they did it with people like me on their mind, if you know what I mean. I like the way it looks, I like all the security features, and love how you can just add stuff and don’t even have to mess with your ftp, it just saves a lot of time and less pains in the butt.

Rick: Robert, I have seen stuff like this happen before man, people produce good programs, and after a while they end up selling out, and more and more people get their hands into the works and soon everything starts messing up, that is why you had so much problems with Nuke, too many people rewriting everything and not enough testing.  :knuppel2:

Me: Well, it might be a newer program, but I still have not had any problems with it, just a few bugs here and there, but I think these people know what they are doing.

Rick: So how much are you paying for all this stuff, you said it was for free but there is always a catch you know that. Any real program needs to make money, that is why V-bulletins is so great, you get what you are paying for, and all the support that you need.  ???

Me: (laughs) I don’t think that is going to happen here, I mean, I know that no one can work for free, and yes something do cost money, but this program is free, and buddy, support is the best that I have seen with any site, there is always someone to step in and lend a helping hand, not like nuke or phpbb who only wants money, they let their greed get in the way of their product.

Rick: They will hit you up for money, they always do, I think they are just playing you along and at some point they are going to start asking for money for their support, it happens way too much and nothing changes. You had better wise up and just get V-bulletins and put this one aside, I think you are going to regret in at some point.  :tickedoff:

Me: I don’t think so, and no I am going to stay right here where I am, I have not heard anything bad about these guys, and I still haven’t had any problems with my forum yet, and if I did I know that someone would help me out. If they ask me for money, I might make a donation to the site, but other then that I just can’t see that ever happening, and to be honest with you Rick, V-bulletins isn’t all that great, I mean it is good but not great. Look man, just download the program and play around with it for a while and test it out like you do everything else, find all the bugs and issues and then come back to me and tell me if you still feel the same.

Rick: I already downloaded it, just need to find the time to install it, but I can assure you I will find a lot of problems, has anyone talked to you about security problems? Your site might be easily hacked, and then what you going to say? That is what happens with programs like this, some one will hack the program, I can’t see any real security topics, this might be a problem that they haven’t considered.

Me: I am not worried I feel comfortable, that was the one thing I hated about nuke, that is all they talked about is security problems.

Rick: That is because they have to many people writing scripts, and trying to invent new ideas that are not fully tested, and some where someone can break the code then you are all screwed, that is why V-bulletins is always the best way to go, that is the first issue of everyday new security problems.  ^-^

Me: Whatever, just get it up and running and let me know what you think after you work with it a while. I am sticking with these guys from now on, I am not worried, and man I would hate to have to make any changes to my forums, It is working just fine.

Rick: Well man, I will check it out and get back to you, I am telling you, you are going to regret it, these fly by night programs never work out in the end, nuke started out that way, was good at first but then flopped, but it is your neck. So anyway, hows your mom?  :tickedoff:

Conversation went another way.

Maybe not word for word but pretty darn close, I just wanted to show you just a little of what I was talking to this guy about. He is really big into V-bulletins as you have already noticed, but as I stated I am pretty happen with what I have.

Are you sure you weren't talking to TwinsX2Dad? :P

AFAIK, Bloc hasn't even modified any of the SMF permissions other than to add checks for them in TinyPortal. I don't foresee any security problems with TP. I hope he tries it out and has a little fun. After all, that's what it's all about. :)
