Downloads Manager - Link to files instead of upload ?

Hi all,

I'm wondering is it possible to make new download item by provide a link instead of upload a new file, since I'm planning to separate files, media content from web server to make it more easier to scale in furture.

For example: Instead of upload files to www.tienf.com, I upload them to media.tienf.com and put link to Download Manager.

Bloc have said that outside linking to files will be possible at some time in the development, but cant say when or even what version.
Will probably not show or be until he have made the module handling for TP 100%

Yes, I see that someone share the same favorite to me , thank you a lot to lets me know. Atm, should I make a patch to get it work ? Is it difficult ?

I would say that it wouldn't be that difficult if, and only if, permissions as to who can download are not an issue.  In other words, If you want to be able to say what members can download files, and which members are denied that permission, this is where you would run into problems.

In my situation, seem we dont need to restrict users from our resources, just have to be our members and they can download as much as they'd like.

Which file should I start to implement it ?

If it was me, and it didn't matter who can download, I would just setup a separate page with links to the files.  This could even be an html or php article and you could stick the link to the article in a TP menu in your left panel or something.  If you use an article with links, you could even have separate articles containing links to different categories, and each link can have a place in your menu.  shouldn't be too difficult.  In other words, this would sort of be something that wouldn't even be connected to the TP Download Manager.

Since this is in Feedback now, Bloc or some of the others here might have some other ideas for you.

Moving the downloads outside of TP's folders will allow everyone to share those links across the internet. Which means, sooner or later people won't be downloading them from your site by visiting your site. They'll be downloading the files from some other site that is getting traffic because they are linking to your files.

Yes, that's really a problems, but the idea of separate media/files from www is nice, doesn't it ? Do you got  idea how we would do so without get risk by direct download ?

what you could do is setup password protected folder, and link it from a side block, call it member only downloads, but then you would have to send only the members you wanted that password, or you could put that password to those  members private board

You could try copying the .htaccess file from the tp-downloads folder to the place you are wanting to upload your files. This will only allow the server to access the downloads. I'm not sure how that works across subdomains on the same machine though.
