Ok, this is weird. I uploaded a second copy of Helios to play with a different variation on the colour scheme. There was already one copy running along with six other themes. All were running flawlessly, with TP installed and functioning on all of them.
So I save a minor edit on the second copy and the forum goes nuts.
No admin button on the button bar and the button bar displaying above the user info/banner box!
WTF?
So I get back into admin by using the browser bar (action=admin) and select SMF Core. TP is still showing as installed according to the package manager but no TP functions are working on any themes and there's masses of error messages being generated.
What the hell is going on here? A minor style edit on an separate copy of a theme crashes the whole joint?

Oh and one other thing. The 1.1.4 update package that's installed has this title:

   SMF 1.0.12 / 1.1.4 / 2.0 b1.1 Update

Umm, that last bit doesn't mean SMF2.0 Beta does it? Because if it does how on earth did that get there? I'm not a charter member and I downloaded the package straight from the SMF site.

Btw, both copies of Helios are now deleted. Just as a precaution. Forum is currently in maintenance mode running the SMF Core theme.

I'm sure I mentioned Test site to you recently  ::)

antechinus

Yeah you did. We also admitted that everyone does minor edits to their themes on live sites, even if they aren't supposed to. The question remains: what on earth caused this? It's usually quite ok to make minor edits on a theme that nobody is using in any case.

Btw, with both copies of Helios gone things are now back to normal. TP is working again on all themes. Error messages no problem. I'd still like to know what's going on though.

What caused it? You did.
Whats going on? I have no idea.
Whats with the SMF beta 2.0? Thats something you need to ask them..

I really do suggest you set up a test site on a subdomain.. things can and do go wrong.
Remember that some themes do rely on the default core theme for some elements.

Without knowing exactly what you did, I'm as in the dark as you are. I'm not the one playing with your site.
I have killed my site before.

Also.. when uploading or editing.. Make sure your disk quota with your host hasn't been exceeded. When that happens, nothing will save and files end up corrupted or empty after edits.

1/ Who? Me?  :o Never.

2/ Ok. I was just wondering if this sort of thing had happened before.
I sure don't want it happening again.

3/ So it is 2.0 Beta? Hell. I'll be asking them alright. That's weird.

4/ Yes boss. Setting up test forum now boss.

5/ I can tell you precisely what I did if you really want to know.

6/ Ok. I'll check that, but we've just gone to a more powerful server with heaps of grunt. Shouldn't be a problem, should it?

G6Cad

1. Wrong theme version on the test Helios = no forum button and no TP at all
2. When you made the edits, did you do so in the template files or the site and content files

3. SMF is SMF TP is TP

antechinus

1/ Nope. Helios TP download straight from here. Yes, definitely the TP version.
I may be silly but I'm not quite that silly.  ;)

2/ It was index.template.php  What I did was remove the code stretch for displaying time logged on in the header box. I've done the same thing before without any problems.

3/ Yep. Fair enough. I'm not on your case about the apparent presence of 2.0 Beta. I'll take that up with them. I came here initially because the Package Manager was showing TP still installed but the TP functions had crashed.

PS. Just to get this straight; is it confirmed that the package is titled as a 2.0 Beta package?

antechinus

In regard to 1/ above; it wasn't the forum button that disappeared. Home and Forum were still there. Admin was the one that vanished.  :)

There's another odd thing which is definitely TP related. In our side panel we have (from the top) a search window, shoutbox, theme changer, articles, permissions.
Our global mods only see the theme changer and articles. The other three aren't visible to them. They're visible if they sign in on a normal member account though (yes, we checked this).

Any tips on this one?
