Permissions BUG!!!

ok i just finished posting on my site, and on SMF and this is something that has an influence on tp themes.. so i feel that it is ok to post here.. Bloc if i am wrong, or you can fix this let me know..

it goes to explaining when making a theme the way that they say to do, via the default/"core" copy, what is happening, is the permissions are not being set right.. because it doesn't have my username as owner...but has "nobody" and therefore i dont have permissions to edit files.

i have since this convo with my host, and knowing it isnt his fault, not mine, (followed everything to the "tee") i have made a designer package mod to correct the way of doing this.

Not really smf OR TP issues, not even a template one. It's a host and server issue if you dont stay as owner to the files when the server add or change any of them.

You have to seek help from your host and ask them to change the settings on the server so you become the owner of all the files even if the php/apache add/change anything.

so you are saying everytime i wish to create a theme, and doing it the way that it is written here, that i must ask my host to change the settings?? when i can upload a theme and it does not do that?? that does not make any sense, G6.. at least to me. if I take one of the packages i did, and install, i do not have to ask for host to change any settings.

No it is something in the server settings, IIRC Apache, when set properly you will have no problems. I went through this with my current host when he/we were setting up my account.

He'd never had a dedicated server and I'd never seen a 'CP'.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but "nobody" (yes, this is a real linux user) acts like a user in linux. When something goes wrong with permissions, etc. they usually go to "nobody". Your host will have to change them back to you as the owner.

As Noko said, if your host make the proper settings to the server, you will not need to ask them to change it every time.
But if your host refuse to change the settings so you always will be the owner, you have to manually install the default theme every time you want to work on a new theme.

There is nothing much SMF or we here can do to help you with that permission issue. There is no workaround we can use or even show you to as it's the server your on that holds the settings it uses

ok thanks ya'll.. i will show this to my host and see what he has to say about this.. as he does do the change for me.. but he shouldnt have to keep doing this.. reguardless.. would like to post the 2 packages for people that have this problem and their host will not do it for them.. hope this helps other people

"Nobody" is the user that apache is running as. It doesn't matter which user apache uses though. Apache by itself cannot solve this problem. Thats what things like phpsuexec are used for. It forces apache to run the php scripts based on the user that the account is hosted under. Not all hosts run these things, and some will even refuse to do it. But its nothing that can't be fixed quickly. Don't forget when you run into these permission problems with the ownership, you can always go into the package manager options and tell it to make all the files writable.

thanks ICH, my host has it taken care of for me.. however, i have been told on smf that i can not distrubute my "fix for this problem" so if i cant do that, then how am i to give out themes too? maybe postnuke or someone else would like new stuff.. im 38 hot now.. all i was trying to do was help out other people who might be will be in this situation too.. so.. im going to go do some thinking.

i do appreciate everyone's help.. but there will be no themes from me at this point. i might break a rule.

Only a custom theme package or mod can be redistributed. You can't just hand out SMF files. If everyone did that you'd have to worry about people handing out old versions etc.
