Not really a CMS IMO, but can probably be used as one.

True, but it's quite configurable.

Just thought of another I installed for someone a while back, CMS Made Simple - http://www.cmsmadesimple.org/.
Never personally used it, but from what I remember, the guy said it done everything he wanted it to (he used it for a shop info site)

I prefer Joomla, but you said you tried that already...

Thanks everyone, I appreciate the feedback! Have decided to give MODx a whirl!

Hi ZarPrime,

In the last CMS awards it was voted 4th best I think it was - Drupal, Wordpress, Joomla, ModX (pretty sure that was the order) so thought it would be worth a shot! Had a look at drupal but hated the backend! Website showcases look pretty good, just wish I could get my damn ftp client to upload the files without constantly crashing! Ahhh the joys of it all!

I've used MODx and Drupal and I think they both have a good backend once you get a little familiar. ;) Personally I preferred the Drupal backend but I have only used either one briefly. I've also used Nucleus but Nucleus can be a little stubborn. Different packages are good for different uses but it's hard to tell what until you get to know them.

I use FireFTP, it runs in FireFox and has never crashed on me... It does, however chock on the files created by SMF Gallery. The first time it did that I was pulling my hair out trying different settings and other FTP clients to no avail. Finally I renamed the files on the server and that did the trick. Yes it is such a joy! And Merry Christmas, too! ;)
