Database ran site? Can it be done?

I have a KJ/DJ friend who asked me to put together a site for them.  Nothing special they said.  So I came up with the site idea and started to work on it.

NOW, I have found SMF/TinyProtal and would rather run his site with these.

What is the database?  It is all the songs he has in his book for people to sing.
A small sample of the song so people know what it sounds like. (.mp3 or .wav file) (and I also think I need to get intouch with the CD company to make sure that is ok to do. talking 1 min or less sample)
I want to set it up so they can search for a song or artist or genre to see if he has it.
A place for them to request songs he doesn't have.
And a form for them to fill out that would email to him to request him for a gig.
And of course part of why I like SMF is he wanted a calendar to put where he is and when or if he has a private party going on a certain date.
A place where he can input new CDs he has gotten and have a print friendly page that only he can see and print out new books or pages.

I think some of this is done with showing a database in an article.  But how?  Am I going to have to learn some new coding? (shudders PHP?)

Sounded easy when I was just going to do it with no supporting programs.  But I have fallen in love with this stuff and feel it would be easy for him to learn and keep his site updated.  :)  (he has no website/computer knowledge)  The only thing he does know is how to use his computer to run is KDJ/DJ programs and send emails.

I have looked for database information in the search here but nothing I found pointed me towards this problem.

I have a small db right now of some of his songs I have asked him to email the file with the whole song list so I can fill out the db and make the db input stuff.

Thanks in advance for any help.

As long as you have the database setup already in PHP

All you will need to do is create a search function for the DB itself and then you can simply include it in an article with the include('file"); command.

I dont know much about databases or PHP but I did manage to set up my own a month back - a very basic setup much like yours where it contained info in different table cells and people could search it usin a simple search option.

I think the best people who will be able to shed more light on this are : J.A.Cortina, JPDeni or Thurnok.

I hope they see your topic - they are really good with this stuff :D

You would have to use php. No question about it.

I have four sections on my site that are database-driven. All are php articles and include everything within the article, including editors which are accessible only by admins or global moderators. One has a search function. (I need to do a little more work on that. It works, but it doesn't display the way I want it to.)

If you want to take a look, go to http://site.jpdeni.com and check out the

James > Timeline
James > Articles (has the search)
James > Images
Features > Toys and Games > Quizzes

items from the menu. (If you get an error while you're there, come back in a few minutes. I'm going to be working on it and I often forget things like semi-colons. :) )

I see that JPDeni has addressed what I see as (by far) the largest question mark of the music database and its interface.

As to some of the other specific items...

I've seen a few topics over on the simplemachines forum about board jukeboxes. I haven't messed with them, but that might be something to look into to serve up sample clips.

There's a Contact Form mod which can be used to generate an email to the site's admin. I'm sure this can be used (or adapted without too much trouble) for the gig request email.

And displaying entries from the Calendar should present no real problem, though there isn't really anything in place to support different 'types' of scheduled events (if such is desired).

I have an uneasy feeling that Joramilea's understanding of database isn't the same as ours.

In the context of SMF and Tiny Portal an sql database is required on the host server. This is to store the settings and data from the forum.

I understand that SMF/TP are inherently a data driven site with a database running on the back-end.  Basically what I was asking was if anyone had created externally data driven pages within the TP/SMF framework in order to run those same data driven pages in say a PHP article.

JPDeni pretty much answered the question I was driving to, though I may not have explained it in quite the correct manner.  I do appreciate the responses and I just wanted to assure you that I understood what I was asking, though it may not have been asked so that others could understand it.

Thank you, I just had to make sure that we were all talking about the same thing.

I downloaded a jukebox. Haven't played with it yet.  It looks like it might might work and be easy for the DJ to use rather then having to put it into the data base.
