Upgrade Using a backup db

Hi. I have made a backup of my tp 0.8.6 and smf 1.1rc2 install database. I have edited a lot of code (index.template.php) to suit my requirement. As a result, uninstall of some of the mods give me test unsuccessful in these edited files.

So my question is that can I use the old database in a new installation? That is, I make a fresh install of smf 1.1 rc3 and then tp 0.9.5 and use the old db for it so that all the previous data is there?

You can't use an older db on newer setup. Every newer setup add new things to the DB.
So if you want to go back to the older DB, you also have to use the same forum setup as you had when you made the backup

What to do is to overwrite the files with fresh RC2 files from the old RC2 install package (do not upload settings.php, settings_bak.php, or install.php). Run repair_settings.php to make sure all is well.

Next, do the RC3 upgrade as normal.

Next, install the new TP0.95Beta.

Next, reinstall you mods. But you will need to check at SMF that they are compatible.

Before doing any changes, make sure you do a backup of all files, and your database

Okay, the wierdest thing just happened. I had prepared my test site for upgrade, that is unistalled all mods, reset the theme to default, back up the db etc.

Now my test site resides in a subfolder of the main site. However, I mistakenly uploaded the smf update files to the main site folder instead of the test subfolder.

Needless to say, I was worried beyond words can express. I had really done it this time. I realized my mistake halfway through the upload, and sure enough, the main site had stopped working now. I let upload to resume.

Now keep in mind, the main site has a customized theme, many mods installed, and not in maintainence mod.

Having no choice, I proceeded to upgrade the smf install. No errors. Maybe I was not so unlucky after all.

After logging into admin panel, I found all the previous mods (including tp) had been automatically uninstalled. How convenient. I installed tiny portal 0.9.5, again without any errors, applied the updated customized theme (thanks crip!) and now the site is back again, without any errors (none that I can find till now). And all the data is intact. Lucky Me!!

Now my heartiest praise for bloc and other developers here and at smf to make their products idiot proof. If it was not for their great work, how can you expect me, who (mistakenly) ignored all necessary steps and proceeded straight to the install and the everything just worked? Kudos to all.

Warning: Don't take any lesson from my experience and please follow the procedure outlined for upgrading your site. You might not be as lucky as me!

Now we are all laughing, but you should have seen the look on my face at that moment. I was like s***, why is the main site giving error. And then, it struck me that I had replaced the main site's files. It was while the files were being uploaded by the ftp client that I posted this message, in the hope that some one would reply yes, this is possible and I could save some face. I really had no hope of getting out of this all right. I was like, I had to use the 3 day old backup, delete these updated files and ...

And then Mrs. G6 reply (the first one) confirmed by fears. It was then I decided to let the ftp upload to continue (I had paused it in the meantime), arguing that I had nothing to loose.

Yes, I did loose something. That is the time and effort I would have gone through my testing the upgrade out on the test forum and then replicating it on the main site.

Man, this was really awesome. Moral of the story: Never loose hope.
