The question I have now is how do I actually make that meaningful and useable?

Of course there is also "Will this be incorporated into 0.97?"

I suggest you make a cup of coffe and start reading that thread with the calendar block snippet.
All the answers is in that thread.

There are absolutely no good reasons to have a mini calendar built into TP, as SMF already has a fully functional one. The Block Code snippets thread will give you what you need.

Also search for Clocks, as there's a snippet that will give you a clock and a calendar in one block.
