To give people another option besides TP of course :P
HEAVEN FORBID!! :P :D

The best one? I think that is going to be totally dependant on what you are trying to do and what you're needs are. IMO, (as unbiased as I can be) TP is the best for me. The way it customizes and its ease of use are what makes it best. Considering there's only one developer and where TP is in comparison to other Portals with Features, TP is leagues ahead of all the other Portals. I've played with Mambo, MKPortal, and Simple Portal (when it first came out). None of them are as easy to customize or to figure out, as much as TP is.

in my opinion the visual aspect really needs to be improved in yap
the first time i saw it i closed the site after one click cos it was very grey

having 100 functionalities but visual styles suck - it dosent mix well

just my opinion

That is very true. I like TP because it can be used with Bloc's pre-existing multi-column themes. All portals/CMS's that add columns to themes that were originally single-column will be horrid visually, IMO.

That's the thing, Yap is just plain ugly!  It's too 'flat' for my liking!

As to the best CMS (not portal) out there, for me I would vote Joomla at the moment as there is just so much that you can do with it!  Some other so called CMS systems are little more than online wysiwig site editors.

As to the question of the best portal, well that depends.  If you use SMF then it is definitely going to be TinyPortal.  There was a time I would have said MKPortal, but it's starting to really lag these days as development has practically ground to a halt.  Whera TinyPortal development is rushing forward full steam ahead!  Once TP reaches the same stage as MKPortal was at when I started using it, which it very nearly has, then I will try to get the rest of the ang-sites owners to agree to a switch.  Maybe using a combination of a TP enabled SMF combined with Joomla (I already have a beta site running Joomla with my MK install), I'm a great believer in not restricting things too much!

Will if you look at the theme only, then duh, LMAO.  :2funny:

I don't handle the theme area.  I can but nah.  But if I did I would probally make something like this http://easyadmin.2-si.net/index.php. (Note: This is one of my test sites, so that explains why some stuff doesn't work, be careful,  ::) )

Look like you are using Blocs oxygen as base for that theme you are using on that testsite ?

Actually its one of the SMF defualt themes I'm working off from.  The Babylon theme.  What you do is take the info center out of boards.template.php and put it in index.template.php and put some if statements in there so it will only show up when the forum is present.  It's a little buggy template right now, if it was my top priority at this time it would be finished but I have allot of other things to do.

To clear up some confusion.  You can not use a TP theme on YAP or visa versa.  They are 0% compatible.  Maybe in the future we can have some compatibility with portal template systems.  But for now there is no one standard in making these portals.

Hello all, I just found this thread and I would like to set a few things straight about YAP.  First though let me say this, Tiny Portal without a doubt is the best portal for SMF on the net, bar none, you have the friendliest staff and members, everyone here is always courteous and there is a lot of good information shared here.

YAP is just a very simple portal system which is a MOD for SMF.  We plan on keeping it rather simple, howbeit; nend has done some very nice coding work on the portal and the internal layout.  YAP now loads directly by the package manager and is very easy to add or delete blocks and pages, either in php or html.  We did not try to copy any other portals when we went into development, someone had mention simpleportal.

We had no intentions of being in competition with another portal from the start and still don't.  As someone stated in one of the posts here, there is more than 1 builder for houses, more than one architect designing buildings, more than one car company and so on.  We just want to be accepted in the community and are trying to give back to it.  Our portal may or may not be the best or worst, we are not looking for that, just a place people can come, like here, be treated well and respected for their opinions.

We are doing what we are doing because we like to do it and if someone likes our system, we hope they use it and tell others about it.

I have always had the utmost respect for bloc and the other staff members here and at Simplemachines since the inception.

We are NOT the competition.  We are just having fun and wanting to get along with the rest of the SMF community.  I appreciate the comment someone made about us having Tiny Portal linked to our site.

Thanks,

Douglas Brown
