Thats good news! I'll keep your portal on the back burner to see how it goes. Thanks for posting here nend. Looking forward to see what you guys come up with so we can steal your ideas. :P

I can't stop you from doing that.  ::)

Right now I'm making the downloads module.  I code slow,  take plenty of breaks, etc.  All I did was two functions to upload, don't even know if it works or not.  It looks ok to me though,  :-\  , so break time and put it off to tomorrow. LOL

With all due respect to ability and desire, spending the time to reinvent the wheel is probably not the best use of time (unless you are in it almost exclusively for learning purposes).

YAP appears to be duplicating things done by SMF insiders - an uphill battle.

Why not spend the time & expertise on something unique ... instead of spending time on "yet another" download module for "yet another" portal - why not implement a "blog mod" or a "shop mod" or a "fancy RSS mod" - or any other "xyz mod"?

Its a shame to see people with desire, talent & a good old fashioned "go get 'em" attitude charge up the wrong hill.

Why don't just let the people with their dreams do what they want their own way iowamf ?

There are milions of ways to build something from the bottom up, and I'm pretty sure that not all buildings in the world look the same, feel the same even if they have been invented allready.

So leave what he does and don't do out of it, itÂÃ,´s his portal and his time, let him do what he want with it.. :coolsmiley:

lol... I guess its always going to be like this. There are reasons why people start with something similar to already existing things. TP came to be because there wasn't really anything that installs as a mod, and i was primarily interested in using the theme system - which now at last seem to come into play as important part of TP. If thats wasn't important, we could still just use MKPortal etc.

I don't know the history/causes behind YAP, or the goals for it - but there is always a reason.

I think that as long as there is a free spirit in the world, and people are allowed to have their own way of seeing things, diffrent tastes there will always be other similar tings out there, and people who want to build or make their own things, even if there still is similar things allready done.

The taste is diffrent all over the world, some like green, some don't, some like CocaCola, some like Pepsi....

So the thing is, we are all diffrent in everything.
I for instance love TP and dislikes MK , some other Love MK and dislikes TP.

Thats the way things are in the world, and we have to let it be that way :)

The reason for the downloads mod is really for YAP site.  We need a way to easily upload and manage updates and mods without ftp.  I was looking for a easy way but there is no download mod for SMF that I like.  I tried SimpleDownload, didn't like it.

On 1.2 our whole reason was to make a portal that installed as a mod no FTP required and that worked with the database.  1.1 used a flat file structure, we decided to not touch any SMF code on that one.  Any other versions were before I joined the project.  Before I started YAP I used to make mods for E1 and alpha tested E2.  Jax was with E2 support and themes.  IMHO I blame YAP on the newest member of the LSP dev team.  ;)

To give people another option besides TP of course :P

Choice is always good.  Choice drives innovation, without which stagnation would set in as there would be no need to make something better.  I used to favour MK over TP, but inovation on MK slowed, so now I favour TP as innovation and development is continuing appace and one day I hope to be able to replace the old with the new.  As has been said, one man's meat is another man's poison.  Respect to the folks working on YAP, I should imagine it is not easy to get established when the competition is of such a high quality.

I like to try everything portal/cms wise, I have even tried different forum solutions.  It's good to know what is out there, as then you can make an informed choice as to what you want to use yourself on a longer term basis.
