Choose a particular forum post to display in a block

[Inge Jones]

What is considered the best way to feature a particular forum post in a block?  I have been using "promote to front page" for particularly interesting new threads, but it always shows first post in thread and has a small set of ordering choices. Now I am getting fussier and want to dictate which post in the thread, and what order they appear in

If you are using SMF2 you can use SSI.php to grab a particular post.
