Related Error messages: there was, literally 200,000+ pages of errors. The forum.site is SO slow, especially when logged in. It's on a windows server (I had moved everything on one server there last year as I needed ASP for something).

I deleted the error logs and it is making them at warp speed. Here's a sampling. I have NO IDEA what they mean... me NOT coder, me designer, webmaster... me not like code. :o (BTW, these 20 pages are in the last hour or less :tickedoff:

Looks to me like you are using a theme that is outdated. The old themes for TP used to have the leftbar/rightbar/centerbar etc code in them. TP no longer requires that code since Bloc was able to integrate TP into SMF using SMF's template layer system. You'll need to either use a different theme or remove the code from the theme.

The Undefined index: by error I replied to your email about it.

Hmm, I never changed anything. Is that from the smf updates? It is only recently that this has happened. All they were, was the default theme that I modded to look different.

So, is there no simple way to rem the old, bad code from the theme? How compatible are the newer themes? I don't have smf 2.x because I don't have that much time right now to change over and redo all the themes. And for reenactor.Net ack! No, not until i have a way to fix the links mod to work w/ 2.x I HAVE to have that.

Still, if there's something that would convert the themes to an updated version...

I looked at the code, WHICH part would I remove, or is it a whole bunch of different places? That would mean I could not do it. As I have said, I am not a coder and am not good in it. I use this stuff as an ends to a means, not because I enjoy programming. If someone could tell me an easy way to rem the old code, that would be nice.

Having to constantly update this stuff gets annoying. I use TP more for the website... the Forum is nice, but totally not important. I have helpers and such who do not know html, but care about the end product... It needs to be simple for them. Does that make sense?

(one last note, my other sites which still all use smf 1.1.x are on a regular server, this is on a Windows one...  is that the main problem?)

To manually re-add the mods would take a lot of work. I know that the following had some work done to them:

  • Country Flags    1.1.2 (I know I modded it (w/ some help) to show WWI nation's flags in one's posts (still couldn't figure it out for the profile)
  • Custom Profile Field Mod
  • Ultimate Profile    0.9 (this one seems to be causing major problems for people trying to use w/ SMF 2.x)
These things I need. And as far as upgrading to 2.x... joy, how do I convert the themes? Can I just drop in the artwork and css files? I use the default theme, just modifying it because I want the site to have the same structure, but a different look for differing nationalities. I figure that if I convert to 2.x I could do the mods onthe default,t hen do the themes, but rebuilding the themes from scratch would be very time-consuming and I have a pretty busy work life these days.
I know that many find all this dumb, but I had these websites BEFORE I converted to SMF and TP. I converted to TP because it did what I wanted. I had looked at joomla before... it was too hard to make it work. I do not have hundreds of dollars to pay people. I really hope not to have to go back to static websites as I like the way this works, but if it becomes unmanageable, I might have to. That would be sad.
Any suggestions would be helpful. Telling me to go learn PHP is NOT helpful. Again, I am not a programmer. I don't do this kind of stuff often enough to remember it well. I only fool w/ the code when something goes wrong. So anyway, if you have helpful suggestions, they would be welcome.

WillyP

There are lots of themes that are compatible with SMF and the latest TP, you don't need to learn php to use them. No one said you have to learn php to use TP. Just go grab a new theme, and customize that. I would also suggest setting up a test forum, using a backup of your site's database and copying all the files, to iron out bugs like this before upgrading your live site.

Running a website without knowing code is often compared to driving a car without know the mechanics of the car. Yes, you can drive a car without knowing how to fix it. But when it breaks down, there you are on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck, and wondering how much it is going to cost you this time. Tell the mechanic you don't have time to learn how to change a flat and he will just smile and say 'no need, just call me' as he adds another 30 bucks to the bill. Or maybe you'll call a friend who is handy with cars and ask him to come out and change the flat. And the oil, since he is there anyway. Tell him you don't have time to learn to do it yourself, so he better hurry up and get it right.

Freddy

Very true Willy, and let's not forget that the mechanic will also charge you  ;)

Did that. I set up SMF 2.x whatever is the latest on their site. Damned thing is STILL slow, so I did nothing else. Might just be the windows server. I am not thrilled w/ moving it and all the e-mail accounts again. I just use the default theme. I DID look at the mods, and of course some of them I rely on for functionality don't work w/ 2.x -- Joy.

I didn't say I don't know code. I don't know php. I can alter some things, but unless I actually take classes or something, I will not be able to really do anything w/ it. You either are, or are NOT a programmer. I am be a "not." I am more a designer. I know, bad word, but 'tis so. I got into TP because I couldn't make joomla do what I wanted, it being the first CMS I tried. It had some great things, but I could not get it to do what needed done on the site and when I told the "experten" I was told "you don't need that." My answer is still the same: "Really, do you know my website? I don't get rich off of it, but it PAYS FOR ITSELF, unlike most out there." Ah needs what ah needs. I ask people for help. I don't ask them to do FOR ME unless I can pay them. Sometimes I can pay them. Does that make sense?

I drive a Mail truck, I manage 18+ surly truck drivers hauling said U.S. Mail, I run reenactor.Net, Great-War.org and some other sites -- my high school alumni site among them. I have set them in TP because I could have it so assistants could help w/ out learning HTML, which most people do not wish to mess w/. In a perfect world, I'd hire someone to do what I bid. In this world, I try to do what I can. I have a few themes I made -- they are for WWI reenacting. I don't want other themes, I need/want these. I made sure to use default as the basis. All I'm really asking here is can I just clip out or rem some code, or is there a LOT to pull out to take out the old TP code? If I can -- how, what, where? Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi....

sturmkatze

Oh and now, it says the page to change the theme is corrupted >:-o Always something. How much of these pages hget changed in mods? Could I just copy one from another forum? That would be nice.

WillyP

The problem is that the php and html are, more or less, intertwined and you can't just go deleting code, whatever language, without having some knowledge of the other. I don't really know how much is involved but it is more than snipping out a few lines of code.

You should copy from your back-ups, not from another forum. When you add mods, the mods change the files, so files from another site, or even from the SMF or TP package, might not have the changes made to them. If you don't have a backup, then you could do the mods to each file manually, but of course that is a lot of work and could introduce errors.
