Heavy Modifications?

Hey guys,

First off, to Bloc et. all -
Great job on TinyPortal.  I'm glad a friend suggested it to me - it's really helped me get one of my websites off the ground already.

To get to my question -
I am about to start a large website project which has some very custom needs.  The GUI is being designed by a graphic artist at the moment.  Even aside from that, though, there are some serious modifications I would need to make to TinyPortal/SMF to make TinyPortal+SMF be a viable solution for the project.  Without getting too in-depth, I would really need to clean up the site as a whole, and add some significant features.  The site is largely based upon a transparent point system, you see - which is good, because TP/SMF already has a Reward Point system built in.  I would need to do many things, though, in terms of making rankings based upon RPs, an idea submission module, give people an automatic +1 RP when they post, and the list goes on.

So my question is -
How easy is this to do with TP/SMF?  Would I be better off building my own mod of SMF without TP (I doubt it)?  Are there any tutorials or documentation on modding either?
(Sorry, I guess that was 3 questions, heh)
I have moderate experience programming in PHP, but I am a programmer by both trade and hobby, and have been coding in C since I was 11... as clean as I am sure TP/SMF's code is, though, modding another person's code is rarely easy...

Thanks a ton :)

Cheers,

Mahtan

TP pretty much wraps itself around SMF. I think you're going to have to do more modding to SMF than anything. There aren't too many people around here that are capable of what you're asking. Sure its possible, but it sounds like a project that is out of most peoples leagues around here.

Thanks for the reply!

Hm, the modifications I would need to make to TP would be along the lines of removing some of the top/header linked pages and modifying others (such as "Help"), as well as creating a completely custom skin.  That seems like it would be pretty viable to me... I assume there is a tutorial on theme creation somewhere or another?

I think SMF lacks a good deal on the tutorials or theme information. There are a couple of threads at SMF that give you the basics. That's about it. Editing the help page will be SMF. Removing stuff from themes is not hard at all. Give it a go and we'll help along the way Mahtan.
