What is a category? How do you use them?

SMF defines categories and TP allows us to define categories. Can you please explain the difference and maybe show an example of TP categories in action?

SMF lets you arrange the different forum boards into categories of your choice.  For example this site has

Development, General, Themes and TP Download.  all as categories in the forum. 

Tinyportal has a Article system, so again you can arrange your articles under categories of your choice, such as, User submitted articles, Site articles, or anything you choose to call them.

Permissions for forum boards and articles can be adjusted as required.

And, in addition to what Lurkalot said, you can also setup different categories to upload files to with the TP Download Manager.
