Login behavior

Okay, as far as I can tell, the default login behavior for SMF is to put the user in the forums, thereby bypassing the home page.  It also dumps the user in the forums when they logout.  Is there a way to force it to go to the home page upon login and logout?

And if anyone has any ideas how to stop SMF from automatically granting Guests access to all the forums, I'd greatly appreciate it.  Right now, I can block forums from registered users, but guests are free to see everything as I have no way to control their access like I do with created membergroups.  They are outside of that arena.  I tried saying follow the permissions of a particular group but it seems to ignore that.
