Hi, :)

From what I see there is not a place to put this. :-\

I have been running a SMF forum for about 18 months.

A couple of months ago, I decided to add a portal, and looked at Tiny Portal and Simple Portal. While I don't remember why, I ended up going with Simple Portal. Yet, there were compatibility problems with my choices of themes and mods. :tickedoff:

A friend (that had originally recommended Tiny Portal) said that they had some ideas and would assist. I accepted the offer.
After many long hours of code crunching by this person (to make themes and mods function), the forum is nothing short of phenomenal!!   It's just fantastic!!!  ;D

Yet, I have a poser or problem. As the main administrator of the forum (which is now using Tiny Portal) I only know how to perform the basic forum functions. I have no idea how to do anything with Front Page, Articles, Blocks, Widgets, Gallery or Galleries, Permissions on what guests see or not. I think you get the idea. :buck2:

Perhaps I haven't had enough coffee this morning, but, I don't know what to do. :-X

I have looked at the Docs here, and started getting lost. ???

I just don't know what to do, and feel that my Technical Assistant has gone way beyond what was expected. 8)
But still...what to do to trim the edges (guest permissions, appearance etc.) :o
Hmmm...

Be Well,

PS - How funny that my membergroup is "TP Challenged" ;D

Best way to learn is to test

Block code and snippets board, a LOT of reading and a lot of diffrent ready to go code sippets you just past in in a block and save. Most if not all snippets have a description on what type of block and what you need to do, most of them are about 4 or 5 clicks away from shoing up on your panels.

Articles you can read more about in the docs, create an article and write in your text, add images and save and it will be done.

Downloads the same, create a category and start upload files to it and save, also there it's about 3 or 4 clicks only.

So my best answer is, have a look around, read the posts in the block code and snippets board and try your way through. :)

G6,

Thank you for your quick reply.  : )

One of the issues with Simple Portal was that it considered "posts" in the forum to be "articles". In Your Sanctuary (due to it's nature and sensitivity) the posts by members can be quite personal. They are NOT articles!!  An article "should" be something that is posted "specifically as an article" and nothing more or less. : O

The Blocks, I worked with on Simple Portal, but they were "Pre-fab" or made up already and you chose where you wanted them - Top, Bottom, Left, or Right (in whatever order or sequence you preferred). You could choose to create a Block with HTML, XML, or Php and then put it in one of the above positions in whatever order you preferred.

Any similarities??

So yeah, hunt and peck huh?

Thanks again,
Cloud Walker

No similaritys at all, allthough TP holds some predefined blocks, but if you want to add your very own code and content in a php, html, bbcode, javascript or RSS feeds blocks , it's just add in what you can find out there on the net and activate the blocks and where you waant them to show up :)

Blocks can be added everywhere you like, top, bottom, frontpage, left right, inside articles, inside any other page and also for what ever language you like, more or less everywhere with no limits :)

Articles in TP are just that, articles you write and add your own content to, you can write a book if you like and set what ever permissions to that article you like to show for who you want, the ones that doesent have permissions, well, they will not see anything :)

So the best way to sescribe it.

1. you can set up a SMF/TP site with in minutes and only use what ever predifines blocks there are.

2, You can set up a site with no limitations what so ever, your imagination are the only thing that stops you.

Wanted to add a small note from your first post.
themes, they adapt to tp just like they would with out it, upload, install and there it is allready set and ready to go ( if you use versions over TP v1 )

The best suggestion for learning TinyPortal has already been stated; just setting up some blocks and testing how your site's appearance can be tailored using TP's features is not too hard. TP includes some very useful functions that can present a professional design without too much work being involved.

I encourage you to try some blocks and adjusting their respective options to explore what TP provides in flexibility.

TP is awesome as you'll soon learn as suggested , need a Theme or Themes ??.. checkout the Gallery of Theme boards.

SimplePortal is quite similar to TP actually - although they approach the concept slightly different. So yes, TP got blocks too, either pre-defined ones or you add your own. Without looking at SP latest, the block OPTIONS in TP might be slightly bigger - you can set which groups can see it, which groups can edit it and where it will appear. "panels" are just the containers for blocks, like SP, although here you got 6 positions + a special "front" position, where it show only on the frontpage. The panels can show their blocks in different kind of ways, vertically or horizontally stacked + other more elaborate ways.

Articles are extra pages within SMF, plain and simple. As they can also contain PHP code you cna do many things with them. Apart from pure text, you can even house "mini-apps" of PHP within them. A long range of options exist there too, mostly about what should show. You got a "intro" field as well as the main text, which make it easier to write a short summary in listings(which in TP will be a index.php?cat=xxx, a category of articles that is) while the full text on the page.

Articles can even be totally stripped. Not many use that I suspect, but it gives you more power to setup splash apges or pages that have little to do with forum as such.

Thats the gist of TP, the third item is the modules, which now consists of 2 built-in: Shoutbox and Download manager. They work in similar ways, with many of the same principles applied to them. Shoutbox mostly resides within blocks, but Download manager has its own calling.
