Entitlement issues

This morning I read a blog entry by author Neil Gaiman about some controversy surrounding another author George R. R. Martin. Martin is a fantasy author who is in the midst of a series of books. (I've not read this particular series, but I've read other books by Martin, which I really liked.) He had given a date when the next book in the series would be available and that date has passed. A group of his vocal fans are rather annoyed about the fact that they've seen him (gasp!) attending conventions and possibly even writing some other things when he ought to be writing the book they want to read, damn it!    I thought Gaiman's response was very good and may be applicable to other circumstances as well.

Definitely quite a good read, and quite appropriate to other situations that are very near and dear to our hearts.

Technology has brought us to remove the element of timing and patience from almost everything in our daily lives; if we can not check the status of something via email, Twitter, cellphone, or a tray icon, we begin the process of concern and frustration at a very early point.

It seems ironic that maintaining the status updates to any degree of truth or accuracy can be as time-consuming as the developmental project itself; therein lies the rub.

As with innovative writing, most free software is written upon inspiration and completion comes secondary. But that is what makes a novel "great" versus "pretty good". Often, books or movies require sequels to tidy up the unanswered questions.

Would you rather have something quick that works 'most of the time' or something that is dynamic enough to work for everyone- as time saved on a quick project will most likely result in extra time to debug problems.

Personally, I write code much better without the pressure or a deadline, and would rather establish the reputation of providing a solid project without the long list of major problems attached to each release.

That is what I see of much of the teen's and young adults. I have to say I am somewhat guilty of it as well.  In my hobby of Scale R/C, if I need parts, it is much eaiser for me to hop online and order something to be delivered to my door, with free 2 day shipping then to drive down to the one local hobby shop and put is on order there... I make every effort to support the local guys, but sometimes I just want it faster, and technology enables me to do that... Not exactly along the lines of this thread, but closely related.

Sometimes this stuff is just amazing!

My wife has the 'Oprah' show on just now and they are talking about a similar topic... in one family that they are interviewing this is happening:
The Mom is in her bedroom, working on her PC and she wants a glass of water.
Her Daughter is in another bedroom, texting with her friends on her cell phone and can't hear her mother.
Solution? The Mom sends a text to the Daughter in the other room asking for a glass of water.

Maybe it's just me, but that just sounds dumb.
