X-Ception

Hello all,
For a long time I've ran a Joomla! site to host one of my sites - while it performed quite well my users have insisted on a more community focused site, so TP+SMF was my choice of usage over several other systems i reviewed (OCPortal, MkPortal, IPB+portal).

I do have a few concerns in regards to TPDownloads specifically, while my site is primarily a news site it does make use of downloads, 3500 ish at last check which im slowly importing from the old site..

A few options in the TPDownloads settings are getting me somewhat worried about performance once i get into the 100's of files stages. As an example featured downloads.. does this turn off at a higher level of selectable files ?

I would appreciate anyones input whom has experience with TPD running a large filebase (with descriptions, not via the mass import option :P ) .. i also like the idea of post groups being included in the restrictions mentioned here ( http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php/topic,15941.msg132243.html#msg132243 )

This would allow a lower post group to download while a higher post group upload (i.e 5 post required to download, 100 to upload)

X-Ception,

The ability exists to set permissions for what post based groups can upload files.  For instance, if a certain post based group requires 100 posts, the permission for that group can be set to allow uploads while lower post based groups can be denied that permission.

As for downloads, you can set permissions for what regular groups can download files from a particular category but I don't think that post based groups can be set up per category.  I'll have to check that, but I'm pretty sure that this is not possible at this time.  If that is not an option at this time, then that might not be a bad option to add.  You can add this to the BugTracker as a feature request here --> http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php?action=bugtracker

As for your concerns about performance, I can't personally answer this as I don't have a lot of downloads on any of my sites.  However, there are a lot here on TinyPortal and there are no performance issues.  Also, there are a lot of users of TinyPortal here that have even more downloads than that, and I can't ever remember anyone posting concerns about performance with downloads.  Maybe someone here with a lot more downloads than I have can address your conerns with that.

ZarPrime,
Thanks for your input, i noticed after posting that upload permissions we're in place to do such - should have further checked that before posting. I notice its also possible via a custom group using a promotion type aspect in SMF that would allow the downloads to perform the way i wish in terms of post to download however this would upset primary group functionality (at least for me) so its not impossible as you stated.

I'll take a look over the feature/bugtracker at some point as i've noticed one or two issues in the somewhat overall solid beta release.

In terms of my performance concerns so far ive done some travveling and seen a fair amount of TP sites with 'large' repositories (around 300-400 range) would be nice to hear from some of those users on how they find administration it - i did notice that most however do have small or no descriptions however which would obviously lesson the database load.

Once again thanks for your input appreciated.
