Problem with Articles

Hi everybody.
I am seting up a little portal and i am getting a problem.
I want to create several categories of articles but display them on the first page but it only seems to work if i put all articles on the same category otherwise only some appear.
If i create a child category it appears but after i enter the child category, no link for the parent category is displayed... is there a solution for this?
