Recently upgraded to SMF 1.1.7 and, as usual, lost a chunk of TP into the bargain. Anyway, I decided to do a manual update on TP, because my package manager doesn't work and never has, so I looked up the instructions at http://docs.tinyportal.co.uk/index.php?topic=140 and found this instruction about a quarter of the way down the page:

OPEN FILE:
$themedir/index.template.php

But when I went to find it in the theme directory, it wasn't there. After searching on the server for it, I decided it must be in either the TP download package, or the SMF download, so I could upload it from there, so I looked fo it in each, and found it isn't there either.

Why?

Am I looking in the wrong place, or are the instructions wrong?

Ken.

Look in the default theme folder for your file. :)

EDIT: All Mods, including TP, should be installed while in the SMF Default theme so thats why when it calls for an edit like that ($themedir/index.template.php ) you can find that file in the default theme folder.

Thanks for the prompt reply, Ken. So are you saying I should edit the file

$themedir/default/index.template.php ?

Or should I be editing the Helios theme, which is the forum default?

As mentioned, the initial install process for TinyPortal is to the SMF Default theme only... so any edits that are called for should be to the SMF Default theme.

Once TP is installed and working correctly to the SMF Default you can then start to install other things, like a custom theme.

Thanks, Ken. The forum has been installed for about four and a half years, and TP for probably two years or so, and I've pretty much forgotten what order everything goes in.

Nevertheless, the instruction is fundamentally wrong when it says to edit $themedir/index.template.php, isn't it, because the file you have to edit is at themes/default/index.template.php?

If so, that info could probably do with being changed so that hapless idiots like me don't get confused.

Thanks again.

Hmm... now ?I've scroled down a bit more and the instruction says to open:

OPEN FILE:
$boarddir/Themes/babylon/index.template.php

Which is in the Babylon theme, whereas you said:

Now I'm really confused. :D

Actually if you read up on what $themedir is at SMF you will find out that $themedir = 'Themes/default/';

$themedir is a quick way to reference the default theme in SMF.

The instructions edit both themes when TP is installed.

$boarddir is the root of your site. So that would be like saying this:

$boarddir = '/forum_root/';

Blunt

Thanks for clearing that up, IchBinâ,,¢ - I'm not a coder, so I'm easily confused.

Because you are actually doing a manual re-installing of your TP, (as per your OP) you need to follow the manual install process and do all of the steps to make sure that all files and edits have been done correctly. The fact that you had TP installed prior to your SMF upgrade really doesn't matter, except that some of your TP files will still be in place from that previous install. None of the edits to your SMF files will be there until you do the manual edit... including Babylon theme.

EDIT: Maybe I'm not stating the process correctly, so this note:
Whenever a Mod (like TP) is installed to your forum using the SMF package manager the forum should be set to the SMF Default theme. If there is some issue that requires you to do the install manually it follows that any edits to the 'theme' files should be the SMF Default theme, but it is also true that the instruction will call for edits to other files, including the Babylon theme.

Sorry to be such a pain in the rear, but I realised a while ago that I was using the wrong set of instructions.

I found this topic about manually installing TP - http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php/topic,14230.0.html and on there is a link to this page - http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php/topic,14230.0.html but that page relates to "Mod Instructions for SMF 1.1.6 and TP V1.0.*" whereas the versions I'm running are SMF 1.1.7 and TP 0.9.8

I found another set of instructions here - http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php/topic,14230.0.html that point to this page for the edits I have to make - http://www.tinyportal.net/index.php/topic,23127.0.html but those instructions relate to versions SMF 1.1.4 and TP V1.0.5

I don't want to run the latest beta. AFAIK the version I've got is the current stable version.

Could somebody point me at the correct instructions to manually install 0.9.8 on SMF 1.1.7, please.
