What decides what posts go on front page?

I have done a lot of searching and have yet to find an exact answer here. My question relates to the frontpage and settings. I have found all the settings that determine the layout and what actually posts on the frontpage (i.e., posts and articles is what I have). I have selected the categories of forum posts to display on the front page, but the same 4 items have been on the front page since I have installed and set it up this way. I realize that I can display more than 4 (or any number really), but my question is - what determines WHICH of the forum posts (i.e., the specific threads in each category) displays and do they change automatically, or is it manual (or do I have any control at all beyond simply selecting the category?)

I hope that makes sense it is a litle hard to explain. I can post screen shots if need be.

Oh, by the way - no link as this is on a test server.

For articles and forum posts they are sorted by date. Most recent post/article going to the top.

So let's say then that I have a category called "General Discussion" and I have the front page set up to display posts in that category. Based on the number displayed option that I chose (let's just say 4), it should always update and show the 4 most recent posts from that category at any point in time right?

If so, what would cause my front page to only display the same 4 posts from that category for the past week, even though there have been all kinds of new posts made to that category (I know it sounds weird since this is just on a test forum, but I have been creating different test posts to test the functionality of the frontpage.

Thanks!

:o hmm this is a good one.. are they stickied?  :P

Nope...I am sure it is one of those little easy to overlook things that I am missing.

Are they new posts to the same topic? Are other topics started in the category that you are pulling the frontpage topics from? The way I remember it working is that it only shows new topics, not new posts. And if someone posts a into the topic, it doesn't bump the topic up. It will only change if new topics are made.

GENIUS! Sheer genius! I knew it was just something small I was overlooking. That was what it was - new topics, not new posts! Thanks a lot Ich.

Now, time to figure out what these TPortal.template.php file! (Will search for this one and post separately if needed). As far as I am concerned, you can mark this one solved. :)
