Before I get flamed, I have read the previous posts on this subject.  After reading the posts it seems to me that there has never been a solution posted to this issue.  The solutions posted have been to contact the hosting company.

I have contacted my hosting company and they assured me that no changes have been made to the server in the past couple weeks.  I have not changed anything in TP, SMF or SMF Gallery Lite.  So my question is what is happening.

On my site the shoutbox showed this error yesterday and today the gallery is showing the error.

Does anyone have any clue what is causing this to happen?

This is whats been xplained before.

If you read that, you can then contact your host again and tell them that they do have made some changes if it worked before, but not now.

Hope this helps

Found a better explanation of the 406 error:

http://community.contractwebdevelopment.com/406-error-not-acceptable-an-appropriate-representation-of-the-requested-resource-could-not-be-found-on-this-server

Hosting company is pointing to the link that is generated by SMF/TP saying that a ";" is not a valid character.

The link for the shoutbox is: http://www.wardsoferiador.org/index.php?action=tpmod;id=shout

Although if I go to the Last 50 shouts and enter a shout it works with the link generated as: http://www.wardsoferiador.org/index.php?action=tpmod;sa=shoutbox;shouts=50

The link for the gallery is: http://www.wardsoferiador.org/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=313

Do not know enough about this to know if these are valid or not.  Any help would be appreciated.

If you're hosting company is telling you that ; is not a valid character, then tell them to add it to the php configuration to allow that character as it is a WIDELY used character for separation in the URL. The fact that your Host doesn't know this, or doesn't allow it really says a lot about them.

This is the setting in the php.ini that would allow the ; and & to be used as a separator.
arg_separator.input = ";&"

woe

I gave them access to my site so they could see what is going on.  The hosting company obviously allows the ";&" separators as the rest of the site is functioning without issue.

I do not know what the difference is between the way that the shoutbox works from a block and from the last 50 shouts page, but it works from the last 50 shouts page.

Hopefully I can get a resolution to this.  If I can find out exactly what the issue is I will make sure to post it here.

Just an update.  Reinstalled site from scratch and shoutbox is not working.  So trying, again to get hosting company to work on this.

Just wondering if anyone that has gotten their hosting company to fix this problem was told exactly what was wrong on the sever end.

What host do you have, and do they know what google is ?

It must be frustration enough for you to not get things working on your site, but have a host that seem to not be bale to set the server so it's working bust be even worse.  :-\

woe

I get what you are saying, but just for reference I installed everything on my pc and the settings are:
arg_separator.input & &
arg_separator.output & &

and it works.

The hosting company is EdibleHost.
The setting on their server is:
arg_separator.input & &
arg_separator.output & &

and it does not work.

I am supposed to be talking to the lead tech there later today.  I'll keep you posted.

Wanted to put a nail in this and bury it forever.  :o

After fighting with Edible Host for over a week they finally decided to look into the issue, for real, only after I threatened to take my business elsewhere.  Guess what I am changing hosts.

Thank you all for your support during this mess.  Hopefully my new host will be better as I found them in the SMF support forum as a SMF specialized hosting company.  8)
