@ deram.

I suggest you skip SMF 1.05 or 1.06 and install 1.1RC2. RC2 is far superior to any of its predecessors. I also suggest you spend some time learning the admin section and all the available features. After you are comfortable with SMF, install the appropriate TP that is available at the time.

If you must have it all now then install RC1 and TP 0.75.

I want to use it as support for a small business so I need it to be stable and I thought that RC1 was not as tested as 1.0.5?

Also I am using sitegrounds and get an automatic installation of 1.0.5 and not RC1 - So I'll probably stick with the "official" version 1.0.5

About my front - perhaps it would be easier with a few scripts instead of an entire portal? I can design the rest my self. I just need the scripts that can go get the "last 10 topics" and "last 10 posts overall".

Cheers,

Alexander

If you're looking at just getting some scripts to do it for you, then I would take a look at the SSI.php file. Load the SSI_examples.html file up and see what you can get with a little bit of SSI code.

OK, so I go to my dreamweaver - connect to my server and find SSI_examples.html?

In there I can find the script you think?

deram

OK, I went to the page of examples.

However for last topics it says:
Recent Topics Function: <?php ssi_recentTopics(); ?>

So:
1. It doesn't tell me how to get the 10 last topics, just the last topic.
2. I assume it is the last topic in the whole forum, but I only want the last 10 topics from a specific asection - NOT from the whole forum.
3. If I were to put it in, I would remove the ?-mark, right?

Cheers,

Alexander

PS. remember, I have to go very cautiously so I am using the latest official version 1.0.6.

Hello

I think we are a bit out of topic' s subject, this is a TP forum and topic, however ...

- I will agree with deram that 1.0x is a better solution to the moment if someone wants to start. There are more mods available (I don't plan to upgrade my working forum until some mods are  ready for 1.1 too), it is more stable and tested and more reliable bridges can be found for other programs. Also it is easier to upgrade when time comes and experience is gained.

- SMF' s package install utility is very user friendly. However it will not be available if your host is in safe mode.

- Even in this case you can have a mirror SMF in your PC, do the upgrades there, test them and upload the changed files in your server. Also it is much easier, before doing a change, to do a directory backup in your PC than from the Web.

- It is natural for a forum for an open source program to have most NEW messages for the upcoming versions. This doesn' t mean there are not enough messages for the stable versions. Some search in SMF's forum will bring it out. The same applies for Bloc Zone.

- TP is still beta but stable enough.

- It is true that a CMS is not always a good idea and SSI commands give enough flexibility. In SMF's forum you will find how to modify the ssi_recentTopics function (it works with exclusion so you have to make and use a small list).

- On the other hand TP is not a standalone CMS but rather an extended TP mod. With the new article options that are tested for .8 (it will not be very long to be prepared for public release) you will be able to use older files at your will and many more.

- Sooner or later, if customization will be needed, some manual editing will be necessary. There are many ways to go and they can't all be prepared in a mod for package install. This doesn' t take out the user friendly interface of either SMF or TP.
For Greek aeromodellers and our friends around the world  - Greek Button sets for SMF
