Ok, most of these are self-explanatory:

userbox newsbox statsbox searchbox html onlinebox themebox shoutbox catmenu phpbox scriptbox recentbox ssi module rss

but some puzzles me, are they explained (in as much detail as poss) somewhere ?

The majority of these are pre-defined blocks that you just select and they automatically supply the content. I have given a small description of each below:

  • userbox -  predefined - gives the user information, avatar, name, PMs, and a few other things (look to left for example).
  • newsbox -  displays the board news, as setup in the SMF Admin section "News and Newsletters"
  • statsbox -  gives the site stats, including who is online, members information and things like the total number of posts, etc.. (look to left for example)
  • searchbox -  just a simple search box like is normally displayed at the top of the forums.
  • html -  a do-it-yourself box. You can put any simple html in these blocks.
  • onlinebox -  shows just who is online
  • themebox -  is a theme changer - look to the left for an example
  • shoutbox - look to the left for an example - users enter little messages, and they are displayed in a small list
  • catmenu - this is what displays the things that you setup using the Menu Manager.
  • phpbox -  like the html box, only you can put php code in here. You do not need the <?php and ?> tags like you do on a php file.
  • scriptbox - an advanced version of the html box, but you can include javacsript as well as html.
  • recentbox - shows recent posts in a small list
  • ssi module -  SMF includes a page with a number of pre-defined functions built into it. This allows you to easily access those functions.
  • rss -  for putting rss feeds onto your site.
