QuoteI wouldn't be suprised if a lot of these were overselling. Sort of like Gmail. If everyone actully used the 2GB they were allowed to it would either collapse or they'd have to increase they server's a lot.
I just kind of assumed it is, though I haven't really looked to closely to see if they are. But I'm sure that they're not a company that's going to go broke any time soon. They've been around for a bit over 4 years. I might end up using the full 4GB I have as I'm currently storing a lot of my own stuff from my home PC on there (never hurts to have backups). :P

There is so much web space available and so cheap, that I seriously doubt this to be the case.

Actually you are wrong there.
Do you really think that google is using 3rd party services for their servers, or for datacenter for that matter?
No!

One 250Gb hdd costs approx 100euros, i bet they can get one for 60euros.

Now, if one user uses 2Gb, you could fit ~110 users in one of those HDDs, now, how much gmail has users?
A LOT!
lets see, just 100 times that, 11 000 users: 6 000euros for the HDDs alone.
Now, account in all the other resources spent for this:

Bandwidth
CPU & Memory
Necessary amount of IDE Controllers & Servers...

You get quite high figures!
Now, apply in the amount of revenue per gmail users: Not Much!

They'd have to definately increase their server capacities a lot, they count on the fact that most of the users won't use a lot at all, very little infact. just like
fractions of percentage, or power users might even use 20% or so.

2Gb for e-mail only is like having on your desktop computer 2 000Tb of HDD capacity or something like that.
Now how could you use all that?
On a veeery long time period saving EVERYTHING.

I know: my e-mails for the last 2ÂÃ,½ years take up only about 300megs or something like that.

Now you probably ask how much i use e-mail:
A LOT!
There is thousands of automated messages i've saved, theres thousands of personal messages also.

I check my e-mail first thing i wake up, and last thing i goto sleep.
Even now, my inbox counts on over 1 000 -UNREAD- messages.

Yes I think Google is a third pary search engine. I don't anyone has really noticed typ in search box on your main server. And look at what search engine brought up you results. If google did not do it then there is most likey a advertisement for you to use there service. The other reson I really belive that is when this particular in company started there stock was cheap as hell. And now if you invested when they first started you at least you can sell now and be well off. So who is paying these people. It is not use because the public only nows about major servers. This might explain some of the extra fees monthy. Think about it how many times do you go on line searching something. Your major servers do not contain all the information that you and the millinon customers they have are looking for.
