Well, I never thought of that. HA!   uuummm..  I looked and could not find a 'turn off search box' option.  I did find a 'allow to search' in member permissions, however that did not remove the box.

hate to say it.  Maybe it's time to hack the template or index.php

i'd open index.template.php or index.php and do a 'search' for search and see if it finds some code.  it's just a ?action=search call.  But if you can find the code that writes the box/button, you could just remove it and it will not show.
