If I ban a user, they can still see TP boxes like the shoutbox and recent posts. I got a guy who i dont want to be able to view my site at all.

i turned off access to those boxes to guests (which i really dont want to do)....but when i ban myself, i can still see the shoutbox and recent posts. I assume TP see's that the offending user has a valid cookie, but doesnt know they are banned via SMF.

Server ban them.. I also created a Banned User group.. not that it matters, Server ban can't stop people changing IP addresses unless you do a subnet ban and that might consist of an entire city block, or more.. more likely a specific Service Provider.

You can ban a range in the .htaccess and they will just see a blank page.

I know all of that is possible, but I want to log their attempts within SMF.

The Banned User group would do what you want.
