Hello all
My first post here on  tiny portal, and its going to be somewhat long. I have a problem I don't know the cause, so please be patient with me as I try to explain.

What is your url? www.alternatechs.com
What error message do you get? None
*copy that message here* No error
What version of SMF? 1.1.4
What version of TP?0.9.8 not installed
Which themes are used? SMF core
Do you have other Mods installed? No
Do you use another CMS? (Joomla or Mambo?) No
If yes, which one?
Is this a test site? No, but it is new and not live yet.

OK, so this is a fresh SMF install, on the root of my public_html folder. No issues there. Uploaded TP .9.8 through the package manager no problem. When I click apply(where it will tell you if it will be successful) I get the successfull on all steps. After I click proceed, in IE I get "page can not be displayed" and in firefox I just get a blank page with the word done on the bottom left side. But TP is not installed, I get no errors in this process.
Earlier today I followed directions here to chmod to 777 basically everything in my install directory but that did not change the result. Can anyone help? Thank you

If the package manager isn't working for you, you will need to go the manual install route. We have a Doc on this in the Docs board so you can read along and follow the instructions on how to do it.

Yes I've seen and read that doc you mentioned, however, I don't think that is a solution but a workaround that is too involved and time consuming, especially knowing that the package manager has no problem installing TP if it is not on the root directory, which I've done before.

Well, then you have to ask why the manager wont work for you in another directory if it worked in the root.
Simplemachines.org holds the answers to the package manager questions.

I did mine manually, IHMO, it's faster to make your TP working rather than finding solution to the Package Manager.. :)

Head on the nail there :)

Ok fine, nail on the head. But how would one determine what is not working? I did install TP with the same version of SMF using that same package manager, only it was not on the root of public_html, it was on a subdirectory, as in www.site_dot_com/forum. That worked for both TP and the package manager. The way I see it, and I can be very wrong, one of these 2 scripts does not like to be installed on /, its not SMF, because that installs, and other mods also get installed. Again, to me, TP might be the one. That is why I am a bit confused, and I was trying to seek help here first.
Also, if I do go for the manual install, would I have to manually uninstall if the need arises?

TP install through the manager is no diffrent from any other mod, it does how ever change a lot more files as it's a lot bigger then most mods out there for SMF.
After some investigation on simplemachines.org i found out that it is probably a server configuration issue more then a script issue.
When you install to a sub directory you have made the folder your self, you ar the folder owner and with that comes the file permissions settings on the server. A sub folder doesent have that stict settings as the root folder have ( on most servers). Safe mode often apply to the root directory and not a self created folder UNDER the root dir.

If you download the phpinfo.php file from simplemachines.org and upload it to your root folder you cah see the settings on the server and how your host have configured the server your on. Most likly they have one settings for the root, and another value for the subfolder created by your self.

The server config forum on simplemachines.org can explain a lot more if you take your time and serach some info about the package manager there.

Beautiful, makes perfect sense, thank you. I'll check.
I'll post back here for results if interested.

Ok, it is now working. turns out SMF/package manager has some issues with PHP 5.0, so my php was changed to 5.1.6 which resolved this.
