Looking for a text editor with a twist

I'm trying to find a text editor that has one added feature. I want to be able to highlight certain lines with different color backgrounds and for that highlighting to be saved with the file. A word processor won't work because I need something that doesn't word wrap at all. It would sort of work to create an html page, using <pre > tags, but it's a lot of work to maintain the formatting and seems a bit excessive.

I've seen a lot of text editors that have syntax formatting for different programming languages, but that's not what I need either. Maybe what I want doesn't exist, but I thought I'd ask in case someone knew of something that I could use.

Is this to make it easy for you to find certain places in the page? If so, phpExpert Editor has bookmarks. Which you can set to hotkeys like ctrl+1. etc.

Sorta. I'm using it to create a chart of my genealogy research and I want to mark where I need further information (like this person's parents) and, in a different way, those which need more documentation to be certain of the facts.

Currently I'm using EditPlus2, which also allows bookmarks, but they aren't saved with the file.

Well I haven't seen any such feature like that. But php expert editor saved my bookmarks. :)

Thanks much. I'll give it a look. I may have to go with html, but I'll give it try.

JP, if you are doing genealogy research you might want to check out the software in the link below.
I use the free "Standard Edition" and it works great for tracking and documenting family history... they also have some paid versions if you need extra features, but the free one dose all that I need, including charts, trees and lots more.

Try this one. It has been a while since the trial period so I can't tell if it does what you want. I don't think the crippled [after trial] version does.
It is a nice editor anyway..

I don't use that one much, but you can check it out it is not your everyday editor.

www.giveawayoftheday.com   has a nice piece of software today. I just downloaded, but have not really tried it yet. It may be usefull to some here...It may even allow you to do what you want to do,but like I said I have not checked it out. It does do a lot though

Hi Deni,

take look at SciTE
It has bunch of flavors out there...not sure if it helps but you can create your own heightlight synthax
http://scintilla.sourceforge.net/SciTE.html
(they could use help with their site :) )

I have used this version of it for my autoit scripts.
http://www.autoitscript.com/autoit3/scite/
It is more of a gui aid than editor...
Also liked and still use EditPad Lite http://www.editpadpro.com/editpadlite.html for dealing with some sql dumps and large log files....
hmm maybe not what you are after but...
