TP/SMF Install Folder

When I installed SMF I had originally thought that the Forum would be a sub-area of the main site...as you would expect with most standard site structures.  So I installed SMF into a folder called Forums inside the public_html folder of my site.

Now of course I'm using TP and really like the features it provides however now I have my main index page inside the forums folder and it is not reached directly by my domain address.

As a workaround I have redirected my domain to the forum index page.

My question is:

What could be the negative aspects to moving everything up a level so that the forums folder effectively disappears and everything is in the root of public_html?

This way my domain would automatically take people to the index page, right?

It's a small thing at the moment..but annoying.

Information on moving your forum is something you should research at SMF. They even have a Doc on it if I remember right. But I agree, it shouldn't be too much trouble if you know what to do.

I set my site up similarly, using 'forums' as a sub-directory. My forum has been running fine for 11 months now and 600,000 page views without any problems in this configuration.

I did, however, place a redirect script in my root directory instead of having the host server do it. Basically speaking, I have just this code to do the redirect:

<?php
header
("Location: http://www.yourdomain.com/forums/index.php");
// only works if you don't output anything to the browser before this code!
?>

However, should you want to move it up to the root directory, this link on SMF's site will instruct you how to change the settings for the new setup. (It explains a 'broken' setup but allows you to adjust the necessary changes for the new location.)

I think that your members will have some cookie problems at first until they manually log back in to reset the cookie data.

I have not moved my forum up because I have other pages that are hard-coded to the location where it is now...  plus, I use other software packages and wanted to place everything in its own directory, leaving my root directory set up for my custom code (logging, banning, etc) before redirecting to the forum.

I moved everything up a level and things went haywire for a few minutes until I got the repair_settings.php file from the downloads section of simplemachines.org.  It corrected most of the issues.

Also I needed to change some path names in php blocks and in the Server Settings and Gallery Settings in the Admin panel.

It seems to be working okay now.

Thanks All!

I've been trying to convert my blocks to use relative links versus absolute, for this and other reasons. (Old habit from the DOS days- wrote extensive batch files and relied on absolute paths to eliminate problems...)

Glad it worked for you.
