Well I had everthing running smooth for a few hrs anyway. Suddenly while in admin not tp admin I got this error when trying to do anything. I could not access the site only the cpanel.

Parse error: parse error, unexpected $ in /home/*******/public_html/index.php on line 206

Some how I lost like 150 lines of code. The file was replaced and I accessed the site again and got this instead if the forum.

Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_STRING in /home/******/public_html/Settings.php on line 28

here is that part of the code.

########## Maintenance ##########
# Note: If $maintenance is set to 2, the forum will be unusable!  Change it to 0 to fix it.
$maintenance = 0;      # Set to 1 to enable Maintenance Mode, 2 to make the forum untouchable. (you'll have to make it 0 again manually!)
$mtitle = 'Maintenance Mode';      # Title for the Maintenance Mode message.
$mmessage = 'Okay faithful users...we're attempting to restore an older backup of the database...news will be posted once we're back!';      # Description of why the forum is in maintenance mode.

The red section is line 28.

Does anyone see anything that might cause that error in line 28

smf 1.1 rc1, tp7.5, amber theme.

link to that thread in smf

Hopefully this is not illegal, sorry if it is.Thanks for taking a look.

I took the liberty of logging into your ftp to look at it. I would suggest you replace all the SMF files on your site. Make sure when you reinstall SMF that your point to the same database so that you don't loose any information if you're concerned with that. The reason I say to resinstall is because it seems your files have been corrupted or something because most of your files are missing a lot of code.

I swear I didn't do anything. How could that happen. Could it be the host ya think. I have no clue.I wasn't doing anything. One second everything is the way you left it and the next :o. I gotta tell ya I am mentally freaking tired. This is tough stuff!!!!

I am having a hard time making a coherent statement about what I have to do and how to do it. Replace files or reinstall SMF. I would much rather replace files if possible. I think I could install it but I am not ooking forward to it.

There is nothing in there I care about losing. There is nothing but the minimum in the db.

Btw. since I had to look at all those php files numbered and highlighted and stuff I had this php editor on my comp for a few weeks[I intend to learn] and I just fired it up. Still beta, but it looks good. I mean that literally "it looks good." 'Cause what does superQ or joneq for that matter know from php. Your probably aware of it. Freebie!!

I use an excellent program, also free, ConTEXT programmers editor.
Seems easy for me.  http://www.context.cx/

I also use ConTEXT and like it. It works well with my ftp client for editing on the fly. Actually I suspect it has much more power than I need but I find it very simple to use.

Back to your topic.....what is the status? Have you reinstalled as IchBin suggested?

I meant to get back. Something happened on the hosts server. He said everyone on the server with SMF had the same problem.

Had to upload all new files [not the settings.php or the other one for settings I think the backup or something]. Then install tp.75 from package manager then upload new theme[old one was bad] and install. Of course had to edit that file. to get rid of errors- $txt['tp-pathtothumbs2']='';--. Seems ok

I have many questions, but do not want to wear out my welcome.at least not right away.

Have ordered that book IchBin reccomended. Fast and easy web development by meloni to try to learn this Php thing. Also looking ito one of the sight offering video tutorials for like $30 a month.

This one looks interesting. Should only take a month right. ;D

you can view some of the video. I would appreciate some feedback before i join up. I mean to use it along with a book and I do not think I will learn it by osmosis ;)

edit. Also had to run that repair_settings.php

I watched a few of those tutorials. They looked pretty good. A bit slow for my pace, but seemed to explain it in terms I could understand pretty easily. I wouldn't mind knowing how they were if you choose to do so.
