Need some help on website.

I have my forum all setup (smf & TP). It works great but need a something more for my personal use

I have plenty of storage available & would like to create a page for private use that will allow me to upload files up to 100mb in size. This leaves php out. I currently have a 4shared account but if I don't access it every 30 days they remove all my files. I tried pafiledb but it won't allow large files without using an ftp client.

I would like to create a site like 4shared.com to store backups of all my files. I have no clue where to start. I tried just using an ftp client but I would like a online style of upload/download. Can someone guide me in where to start? Something I could install on my site or will this have to be created by me?

Sorry to ask this here but I don't know any other place to help with websites. I have a Linux hosted account with godaddy if that makes a difference.

I think if you're going to get into something like that where you want to upload such big files you're going to have to be on a hosting plan that allows you more control over your server. Such as a dedicated server or something. I don't know of anything that allows such large uploads without affecting the server. But I'm no guru when it comes to these things either.

I think a different host is in order, from what I have seen of godaddy, the control over your site is very limited. A host that gives you a full cpanel would be best, and also give you ftp access and uploading/downloading via your domain as well.

Coke, I use hostnine... I upload and make available large downloads as we often mod game map files. It isn't all that expensive and I have a good package. There are some others out there too. Our typical maps and downloads range from 5 mb up to just over 2.0 gb ... Max speed is usually around 4mb.

After reading through your help. I did some more searching. Unfortanatly a dedicated server is not an option for me (to expensive)I have searched through some of the settings from goddady & have found the max upload is 8mb.

I called godaddy & asked if I could increase the max upload their response was no it's not possible. I am very disappointed in godady's customer service. So I am going to start looking for a different host. I currently have 100gb storage & 1000 bandwidth. If possible I would like to keep that amount. My domain fees are coming due the 19th of this month but my host plan is good till the 18th of next month so I have some time to switch host.

Do you really need to host the files yourself?

If you don't mind using an external hosting service.. Just a suggestion, MediaMax offer 25GB free storage.

Zetan, thanks for the suggestion but mediamax has a 10mb limit in file size so that won't help. The problem with free file sharing is there is either a delete period or they limit the file size, most will offer a better package with a monthly fee, but by the time I pay for it & my site I'm spending more than I need to.

I have been searching for a different host, I am leaning toward Hostmonster, anyone have experience with them? I purchased my domain name through godaddy will I be able to keep the name if I switch host?

The 10MB limit is for sending files I believe. I may be wrong.
I use EvoHosting.. feature rich cPanel.. a few personal problems with them, but overall, no real complaints.. the support is good.

MediaMax is probably not for you.. but it's a great option that I've seen nowhere else.. and it's never deleted my files yet due to inactivity.

Cokeman, LunarPages might be worth a look.  I've been hosting a number of accounts with them for several years.  The plan is both generous (350GB storage and 3500GB bandwidth) and inexpensive and I've found their technical support to be top-notch.  Normally I do FTP uploading, so I can't speak to your concern for an online interface but a quick call to their support folks might point you in the right direction.

My domains are registered with Godaddy, and I've never had a problem repointing them to another host.  I don't see why you'd have a problem keeping your domain name and using it with Hostmonster (i'm not familiar with them)  or another hosting provider.

I run a gaming site, and we have uploads in excess of 25mb with a full cpanel and ftp access at byethost.net. User upload limit is 2mb but i can load anything i want through FTP. I haven't tried 100mb. Best thing is they only hit me for $2.99 per month!!!
