Knowing that its going to be a while as mentioned in other threads I have a question.

Will there be child portals in V1?  IE if you want to have one root portal that could link off to other portals using the same db, is that possible?  I cant see it in the current version, although I think if a person made a subdomain and installed a wholly separate smf installation in there linking to the same db it would be possible.

Is this something considered for the next version?

Zetan

There is a package in progress, or was.. that allowed multiple forums to use the same database. You need to ask at SMF.
There is no option for 2 separate TinyPortal installs.. Unless each of the forums has 1 instance of TinyPortal installed.

I'm not sure if this is likely to change any time soon.. if at all.

I don't think there are any plans to create such a thing. In a round about way you can do it with articles and displaying blocks only in the article. But having multiple portals has been discussed, but I don't think its something that is used enough to consider adding such a huge change to TP for.

Rus

Oh well.  What do you think the odds are of success if I create a sub dir, or sub domain, off the main forum, install another version of SMF there with TP and have it work are?

IchBin

Slim to none. :) If I were you I would check out the multiple SMF install mod that someone was working on in the SMF forum.

Rus

Oh well, it was a thought.

Thanks

damn, thats really really bad :(

Thats the only thing i want from tiny portal but its not going to be added?

Vbadvanced is a free portal but it includes it. How can it not be worthwhile? it baffles me. Its one of the most important features missing from tiny portal.

Even adding a option to be able to display news articles from different forums on a subdomain would suffice.

Please reconsider

I think you have to talk with the admins on SMF as the forum and how to use it is their department, a sub forum have very little to do with tinyportal as it is a MOD for SMF.

Im not on about a subforum mate.

Im on about having a news site on a subdomain for a chosen forum (that resides on the main site)

or a option to be able to make tiny portal so you can pick which news gets displayed.

for example :

index.php?action=main : shows all news

index.php?action=psp : shows news only from psp news forum

so then i could do without the subdomain all together.

I could just have my psp news network link as www.whatever.com/index.php?action=psp

see my point?

Rus

The reason I thought it would be great for more than one portal is so that small groups of a large organization could have links to their own site within the main site.

I'm just not a good programmer thus the whole desire to have tiny portal be my main site to begin with instead of building it myself.  I dont want to change the way SMF is working, I just want easily built pages within the main site that grab recent topics from their board and articles that relate to them specifically and not just the main site overall.

I'm not slamming you for not doing it, its your product and I'll probly keep using it and find a way to build these pages within the site, just saying how it could be a benefit.
