I think this is more SMF related then TP, so i suggest you ask over at simplemachines.org.
Sleeping connections = when functions in the forum doesent release the connection to the database and keep them self open and with that you use up the recourses of the server for no good at all.

Check your Admin/Configuration/Server settings and make sure you doesent have "Use a persistent connection" checked there.

If you have more questions you will have to ask them on SMF forums.

hi,

this is the reply i got from my host...

QuoteI have put back your database. Please try fix the problem. In the meantime we suggest you put up a maintain notice on your web before you tackle down the problem.

Connection is establish when your web application connect with the MySQL database. Once it complete the query, the script should close the connection right away. It keeps the number of connections small and all the query much faster.

In this case, your MySQL have a lot of connections and cause entire server hang. You can check the number of connections via login Hosting Control Panel -> Databases -> MySQL Admin -> Current connections.

If we find the same problem again, we have no choice but stop your database again to maintain overall server performance. Thanks.
is this smf or tinyportal issue?

hi G6,
the "use a persistent connection" is never check.

Do as you host say, check what connections that are active and there you will see if and what holds the connection.
And again, post your questions on simplemachines.org as you will have more help there then here.
