Show unread messages [counted]

Is it possible to count unread messages? I mean - I get to the forum page and see:

Show Unread Messages [19]

where 19 is the number of messages I didnt read?

I think this has been asked before and the problem is that it's only when you click on "Unread messages" that the system actually "gets" the messages. It doesn't hold a count of everyones unread messages.

It is a feature of vBulletin but I don't think it's available with SMF.
