User submitted articles

I'm having a bit of a problem with user submitted articles -
They submit fine, I go and approve it, I activate it, and everything seems fine.  The article appears in the admin section's article list as active, but it won't appear in the category it's supposed to on the main site. It actually doesn't appear at all. When I try and look at the article in the preview mode, it says that the article has not been approved or activated yet.

Not sure what I'm messing up here - Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for your time!

How many items have you set to show on the frontpage ?

I only have 1 featured article on the frontpage.

It seems the problem stems from guests submitting articles. If a guest submits, and I approve, it doesn't show up.
