Can you make a re-write of the "Packages" installer function that DOESN'T require full write access to the Packages directory and everything in it?

My host sets all "zip" files (I'm assuming all other archive-types as well) as "read-only" at a level that I'm not allowed to CHMOD.  This means every installation must be manually done, including the TP install.  And while you (the devs) have done a great job documenting your manual install, others do not do so well.

Perhaps this is more appropriate to SMF but it would really be helpful for someone to write it where the directory and all of its contents do not have to be read-only (especially since the zip files are not going to be written to).

Thanks.

The Package Installer is indeed an SMF Support question.

One thing for sure is that they will probably NOT change the installer permissions in the package manager, it's a saftey thing and saftey is one of the most important thing they are working on back at SMF.
When you install SMF, you have what files that needs to be writable in order for SMF to work, and 90% of the times it does on a proper configurated server/host.

The package manager also have a function builded in that make sure the files gets writable no matter what package you are trying to install, the problem is that when you need to use that FTP function in the package manager, the serversettings jump in and set the OWNER of the file/s to the SERVER, and not you or the SMF files itself.

I think it would be better to start chasing the hosts around with a whip and tell them to learn how to set up a server for the forum softwares thats so common these days.

Specifically, what would I ask them to change and to what?  I understand that as it's not your server, you can't be detailed about specific settings perhaps but a little bit of help to know what it "should" be will help in a more directed whip placement.  Thank you in advance.
