Another blow for MS & Vista?

QuoteComputer giant Dell will start to sell PCs preinstalled with open source Linux operating systems, the firm has said.

Read that Dell have a new deal with laptops with linux installed to them.
A budget laptop for 2000 sek will be on the market in June  :)

Celeron processor and 512 ram and 60gb disk   Thats about 1/3 of the oprice you get the same for to day :)

Might be a huge blow for Dell because the common consumer doesn't know what the hell Linux is, yet they are common with the more usual desktop OS...Windows...Which means they will buy what they trust.

They said 70% of the people that voted in their dell survey wanted Linux...So I bet all the people that voted are computer nerds that know how to develop programs and know the difference.  ;)

The point is at least you have the option. I just cringe at computers that are pre-loaded with windows. The minute I bought my laptop a complete format was in order just to erase the spam they put on there. Linux is a viable alternative now days. They certainly will save on a price by not including windows.

However, I'll post another alternative that will hopefull be available in the next year or two in another thread when I get a chance. Don't want to hijack this one.

I am soooo not getting into this "Linux, Windows, Mac debate war".
The same as I gave up with the "Intel, AMD".. "Geforce, ATI" wars....

Until all competing platforms can get it together and support the software I'm interested in.. I aint interested.
I want a computer that works, first and foremostly.

I'm not interested in Vista, it's an over inflated OS.. I'm really only interested in the software that runs on good hardware. The operating system is secondary in my opinion.
I know linux can now support Windows applications inside a box... until software for linux is written cross platform, I just see a sacrifice in performance. Many here use Photoshop, and many Mac users still claim that its vastly superior on a Mac... who am I to argue? I'm a lowly Windows user.

Just my 2 pence worth  :)

It is definitely good to have an option to choose. Imagine if I have a leftover WinXP at home from my old/faulty PC, and I can still buy a new Dell with Linux and install my own WinXP later. Save the cost of having to pay for a new license for WinVista.
