Background colour behind blocks

I have modified the default theme style sheet to change the background colour, but the space behind the blocks remains grey.

How do I change it?

You need to check index.template.php. Right before and after template_main_below() there is a "background-color: #..... inside the <div> there. Change those values to you own, or better yet, just remove it. Then the underlying background will show through.
