I have done it a couple of times and often use an old backup to create a test site. I use these Database Utilities
QuoteThree files in the zip, create_backup.php, restore_backup.php and rename.php. Unzip and create a new folder called backups and ftp the create and rename files to your site. Backup d/b files will be created in the backups folder. If you need to use rename.php, open the file, insert your details and ftp it to your site. Use your browser to run the file.

They were created by [UNKNOWN] and will make a backup copy of all the tables with the specified table prefix, no 2mb or 8mb limits as with phpMyAdmin.

If you are going to ftp files around make sure that php, sql and css files are transfered in ASCII mode otherwise you can get data corruption and useless backups.

Thanks for that advice, the thought of it is scary, lol. I would hate to lose my database.

The voice of experience, once I stopped assuming auto mode would take care of it and made the changes to my FTP client I haven't had problems.

Ok - myphpadmin wont do what I need, it downloads the files seperately but won't upload them to the new database!

Techdomain

you mean you cant find the place to import them, or it times out while doing it (or gives some other error?)

pvcblue

No it would not import D1 setting/info into D2 - said already has that table or such - doesn't matter - I renamed the folder I have the forum in, and have bigger problems now, can't get some of the settings to recognize the new directory, did the repair_settings.php, but tpdlsettings and others won't switch........???????

Things you need to do manually when you move places on the server or to another server where repair_settings.php can fail out is for the themes

Admin/Themes and Layout/Themes and Settings/  make sure all the urls for the themes and images are set correct so it fetches from the correct paths

Also in Admin/Configuration/Server Settings, make sure the values are correct there to, especially if you are running on the same server but from another folder there.
