What about using the felblog to fill the void... It uses a central "shared" upload folder and the ability for each user to have their own Blog space.

Just another suggestion of a way to accomplish your goals.

Also there is good tho wait until TP is released, she have made a LOT of updates and changes the the blog that you can get now, so even i have suspended my Blog module on my site until she releases the new version
