Hey guys,

I am running SMF 1.1 RC2 with TinyPortal.  When my users (and myself) attempt to log in using the "User" box on the left side, a lot of the time they are getting the following error:

Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.

I'm guessing this is a problem with my host, because this same SMF/TP install works great on my other host.  However, that error message is insufficient to file a help request with my host, so I am left wondering what to do.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Mahtan

I would contact your host and have them take a look at it.

Well, as I said in my post -
QuoteHowever, that error message is insufficient to file a help request with my host, so I am left wondering what to do.

What am I supposed to tell them?  That the service is temporarily unavailible?  I am guessing it is some sort of MySQL or session-related problem, but without something concrete to give them, there's no chance that they will be able to fix it.  "Service not availible" is an extremely broad error message.

You can tell them that your site having trouble with the connection to the database, (slowsurf) and that you get connection time out when the forumscripts calling for database data.

They should be able to follow this in the logfiles from the database.

Another thing I think about is if you have done the update that SMF released a few days ago ?
I know i had some connection time outs before the new version of the script.js file in the forum root was changed.

If you havent done the update i think you should try that first.

My question would be a little more probing, but directed toward Bloc maybe - is there a difference in the login process between the normal SMF login panel and the user panel? If there is, this could explain the problem. If there isn't, then I'd look at an installation error.

After all, if folks have no problem with the standard login panel, why would the host be responsible for the User block login - especially if it is the same?

Crip

I sometimes get that same error when doing a search over at SMF Forum, hit reload and it works?

I have become comfortably numb!

A 503 error is telling you the Web server is overloaded. If you're running a shared server, this is common. Usually the only recourse would be to change plans or service providers. If you're running a dedicated server, then it means something is wrong either on the server or in the script.

A good discussion (short) can be found here regarding MySQL/php based forums and hosting types.

By the way this is my first time using either SMF or TinyPortal and i think they are both Excellent and very easy to pick up considering i have no Php experience  i think this is a great place to start learning.

Sorry i should have explained it with a bit more clarity,
As a registerd user sometimes when i return and attempt to login it gives the 404 but if i go back on my browser and try again it works fine :-\
