I've converted my site to TP 1.0 Beta5 and SMF 2.0 RC3.

I wouldn't recomend it for everyone yet as there are still quite a few hickups
hopefully most of remaining hiskups will be sorted out in the next update

Remember that SM F2.0 RC3  still isn't the actual release.. its really just really a glorified beta.
and that TP is still in beta too.. (and always has been ..)

While it's true that my live site is running SMF 2.0 RC3 + TinyPortal 1.0 beta 5-1 this is not recommended for everyone.

If you're like me and love to tinker with your site and fully understand the risks involved then you may be OK. Emphasis on the "May Be", because you can really damage your site if you don't have a fair idea of what you are doing and what the result of your actions might be.

with these posts and warnings, people are put in a dilemma.  you don't give support for 098 (or slowly withdrawing support) but saying that TP1.0beta5-1 is still unstable and don't use it a live site.  what do you want people to use then?  let's face it, most users here, knows very little about php, and that's including me.  for me, i would stay with 098 as i feel that it was "stable" enough though it has a beta tag as well.  i know nothing works out of the box. and the TP software does not come with guarantees.

don't get me wrong, i waited for TP1.0 as well and really want to use it but don't want to damage my site by doing stupid things a noob can do.  the only reason i asked for the download link of 098 was that i'm going to make major changes in my site and putting lots of pages and would like to put a test site first.

Does Microsoft still have windows 1. windows 3.11 windows 95, windows 98 , windows me, still available .. no..
but they have a "stable" and usable version of the next software they are offering, xp and 7 for example.

almost everybody was using xp. vista came but did not do well because of the different issues it have.  and people didn't bother upgrading or putting vista in their machines.  they stuck with xp because it was working while vista, the newer version, was full of issues.  if vista was good, no one would be using xp anymore up to now.

the thing is, TP 098 and TP1.0 became two disctinct standalone software instead of a continuation of the other.  i think, most people would expect that since TP1.0betas might have issues then they will still stick with 098 which they have used for quite a long time and is deemed stable enough.  if TP1.0 becomes stable and probably drop the beta tag then people will never bother using 098 even if it's available in the downloads area.

as a suggestion, make an announcement of the end of life of TP098 sometime in the future (in a few months time?) and that support will end but then we need to have a stable TP1.0.. until then, i think we still need to make 098 available and sad to say, including support..

Blue Steel

i said support by accident.. what i meant was "made available"

TP1.0beta5 still supports SFM1.x not just SFM2.0. so to me theres no reason not to update.

I can't seem to get across what i mean.. :(

I understand you JPD. what i'm saying is that if block decides after reading our discussion or other forms of contact that he is going to make 0.98 available again then thats up to him.. IF he does though there are others that may have their site set up like yours (and mine to a degree) where they have other manually edited things and tweaks etc.. that would like the same benefit of still being able to get a fresh copy of the TP that they'd installed and that their web site is based on, so i'd recommend putting them all up or just the current versions like he has. otherwise its discriminating and will just sprout other conversations like this all over again but about their version.
I think Block is doing the right thing at the moment with only the current version as having other versions available will get people asking for help on how to do things with older versions that most have forgotten about because its not the version they are using. this sort of thing happens all the time on other forums i frequent on other subjects.. eg: programming languages and people still looking for support on older versions because they don't want to update, and then they get upset when no one can help them.
I don't know about others but i have at least 5 backups of my site as well as the originals i installed from saved away safely.
I had tweaks on my site and a lot of custom blocks that had to be updated. from tp0.98 it honestly wasn't that bad. most of the changes were simply the txt$() references. as well as some default template edits (which i have saved in like a mod file .. where i can see what the original line was and what it is after my changes.) I generally leave the original lines in the code but commented out. and I always have a backup of those manually edited files in a seperate backup.

I'm not saying don't keep using 0.98. just that i can't see why that version in particular should be singled out to be made available when other versions are also just as valid. To me it should be ALL or current.. if Bloc decides otherwise then thats fine too.. just like your putting up your points of view on the subject so am I.

With all this said, one thing I know is...I think TP should "IMO" have a section for old 0.9.8 support for archives (lots of valueable data in those posts, and newbies to SMF+TP will definitely assume that those fixes will work for TP1+ Versions), not to have things mixed about...

and have that section non-reply, non-new thread...

@Lord Anubis : thats a great idea. (I wouldn't like to be the person to go through and pick them out to move though). I think that every version should have its own help area whether archived (read only) or still open for new posts/replies. I think it would be a huge task though to go through and sort it all out.

having sections already split into Versions from now would make it easier to archive later.. (just a matter of changing posting privileges to that/those boards) for the unsupported versions

[edit]
Oh and BTW the subject of this topic is "Topic: what version of SMF are you using?" .. we seem to have gotten way off topic. maybe a moderator could split this topic where we started to go off track.

And that's fine. No one suggested that you should do otherwise. :-)

Quotejust that i can't see why that version in particular should be singled out to be made available when other versions are also just as valid.

Since you said that you can't see why and I have an obsessive need to explain things to people who don't understand things, I'll try to explain it to you. :-) TP.9.8 is the most stable version of TP. There are additional features in the later versions, but they are not as stable.

Yes, but I'll be tweaking both TP and SMF and I'd like to do it all at the same time.

This has actually grown into quite an interesting topic.  I don't see any reason to split anything out of it right now. 8)

Nore me ZP the OP did mention 0.98 in their post, so I say its not really off topic as such.

I think that the major change was between 1.0 Beta4 and 1.0 Beta5, From memory updating to 1.0beta4 didn't actually break anything. Considering 1.0Beta4 was out almost 1 year ago (yes i updated when it came out ;) I always do. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR EVERYONE THOUGH) the 1.04Beta got to be extremely stable.

going backwards 0.98 and 0.95 (and i believe 0.89) were all fairly stable . I myself had some problems with 0.98 thats why i updated to 1.0 Beta4

I'm not saying to update your sites from 0.98 to a newer version. (if your happy running 0.98 and its doing what you want/need then great ;) ) I just think that having it available to download as like a benchmark or as a stable release is very misleading. As ALL Tiny Portal releases have been beta. all releases have fixed some problems and generated new ones.

I can't see the need to have it available to download. (for the reasons stated above)

what i do find interesting is that Bloc has removed 0.98 from downloads area and still has Language files for it available.  (oops.. no its not but it is still listed in the d/loads recent files list at the top of the d/loads area for tinyPortal)

I don't think that Bloc would have deleted TP 0.98 if he thought it was the most stable release, If he thought that i'm sure that he would have left it available to download.

Lets be honest here. Every version of Windows that has ever been released is beta. The only time any version of Windows can be considered stable is when they have at least reached service pack 2. They may not label it beta, but there problems have proven otherwise.
