Hrm,  As i have a very limited knowledge about sql i dont seem to grasp it completly,  As well as others there, (read comments).  This is something i have been wondering,  SMF seems to be revolved around people that konw SQL, DB, PHP, etc.  For those of us trying to learn it and still run a forum its extremly difficult when we get a doc that isnt clear in plain english,  Lucky for me i have an understanding but still,  Its nice to be able to just read something without having to figure what decypher to use onthe english that was writen ;)

Alright, I will break it down for you about saveing your forum and database.

In your cpanel you will see back up

Here a pic what it's look like

After you hit back up it will bring you up to this screen

You will see Full backups'
Here a pic I put something around what you needed to do

Note I put Hit this because you need to hit that in your cpanel.

Plus you can do a backup on your forum too.
Go under Forum Maintenance  on your forum.

You will see Forum Maintenance - Backup Database
Check the box and hit download.
This backup will save on your sever

Erm... Using phpmyadmin?  instead of Cpanel. Soz :/

Hrm also what is the procedure to restore once you have done a full backup.  Lets say i do the backup off phpmyadmin which i assume someone will show me how to?
How does one get the tables and the forum to its original state?

Shadow

I'm sorry, I don't know how to use php my admin.

The full back up will save everything on your forum and your database

I found this info about phpmyadmin in my cpanel

Quote6.4 How can I backup my database or table?
Click on a database or table name in the left frame, the properties will be displayed. Then on the menu, click "Export", you can dump the structure, the data, or both. This will generate standard SQL statements that can be used to recreate your database/table.

You will need to choose "Save as file", so that phpMyAdmin can transmit the resulting dump to your station. Depending on your PHP configuration, you will see options to compress the dump. See also the $cfg['ExecTimeLimit'] configuration variable.

6.5 How can I restore (upload) my database or table using a dump? How can I run a ".sql" file?
Click on a database name in the left frame, the properties will be displayed. Select "Import" from the list of tabs in the rightââ,¬â€œhand frame (or "SQL" if your phpMyAdmin version is older than 2.7.0). In the "Location of the text file" section, type in the path to your dump filename, or use the Browse button. Then click Go.

With version 2.7.0, the import engine has been reââ,¬â€œwritten, if possible it is suggested that you upgrade to take advantage of the new features.

For additional help on this subject, look for the word "upload" in this document.

Edit

Here is the home page of phpmyadmin link is below

WOW,  firstly i would like to express my appriciation and commend you on your helpfulness!

Many thanks ill look into it and see if i can figure it out.

So just to confirm i would manually backup the whole forum (directories etc) and then export the SQL databases, to have the ability to bring it back to how it was before a mod?

Am i correct in stating that?

Shadow

Thank you for that kind comment about me.  And Your most welcome too.

Yes, It's will save anything on your forum and everything in your database.  If you have mod's, code's or everything it's will save in the full back up.

All the best luck with figuer the php my admin.

Edit --

So far you are correct about that.  Yes, It's will save anything in your cpanel, database's and forum's

k kewl.... i suggest the mods/admins make this a sticky for those that need to know how to do it from beginning to end as we have covered pretty much everything here.

Thanks again :)
