Actually ftp> is the client connect tool.

ps aux | grep ftp should bring up any process that has the word ftp in it. If you don't have local host, then you don't have it setup properly or the service isn't running. Fedora's forums have great tutorials, I'll see if I can't find one for you.

I followed everything said in the link and still without luck. Please continue help me on the issue if you can and I really appreciate. The reason: I am afraid that download/upload features might use it. Also, just becaue of ftp, I am working on smf- g2 integration and having the same problem.

Thank you.

If you want help, you have to help me help you. Honestly though, you're better off getting help at a site with an actual linux guru.

What are you having a problem with? What errors are you getting? Are you running this on a seperate machine or on your desktop that you're using?

I am sorry as this may go forever. I will try my best to bring to you the info that I think is relevant. Here is the line that I got:

[root@localhost vsftpd]# ftp localhost
ftp: localhost: unknown host
ftp>

The other information might be useful. I use a free domain name from www.dyndns.org and they provide free service to match my IP. Does ftp need more than this, i.e., some kind of portforwarding?

BTW: I wish that the download feature in TP does not require ftp server. Otherwise I will be continuous huanted by this issue.

Thank you again.

Can you post your vsftpd.conf here please?

I followed this: http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/wiki/index.php/Quick_HOWTO_:_Ch15_:_Linux_FTP_Server_Setup

Hold: ftp 192.168.1.101 works, but ftp localhost does not work and I am working on the issue.
and now ftp works. However, I got an error message when using the ftp from plugin interface:
500 OOPS: cannot change directory:/home/ftp-docs
What I did was:
1. add ftp-users group
2. mkdir /home/ftp-docs
3. chmod 766 /home/ftp-docs (chmod 777 does not work either.)
4. useradd -g ftp-users -d  to /home/ftp-docs user1
5. passwd user1

I feel like that I am close to there.

You have to have the user directory named the same as the username AFAIK. useradd ftp-docs and then passwd useradd

It doesn't really matter the group unless you start specifying in the conf file. Keeping the user chrooted in their own home directory is how I did it.

Here what I got from shell:
[root@localhost vsftpd]# ftp 127.0.0.1
Connected to 127.0.0.1.
220 (vsFTPd 2.0.5)
530 Please login with USER and PASS.
530 Please login with USER and PASS.
KERBEROS_V4 rejected as an authentication type
Name (127.0.0.1:root): twj

230 Login successful.
Remote system type is UNIX.
Using binary mode to transfer files.
ftp> cd /var/www/html
250 Directory successfully changed.
ftp>

No problems in changing directory.

However, in SMF, I still get:

Quote550 Failed to change directory.
