This feature would be used for sites that have more than one area of interest - but the interests are common enough to want to share the same database and forum.

The home page would be targeted to the entire audience, but additional buttons at the top could be used for site specific "views" (portals).

Example, taken from TwinsXDad's Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts scenario:

The top row of buttons for Scout web-site might read:

HOME BOYS CUBS FORUM HELP SEARCH PROFILE LOGOUT

The "HOME" button would be the main portal - the "BOYS" and "CUBS" buttons would each be separate "portals".
Many blocks would be the same (ie, USER, CONTENT, STATS) for each of the the portals  ... but the BOYS and CUBS sub-portals could have their own blocks - such as boardnews and recent topics taken from their respective interest area in the forums.

I know Gallery, Arcade, Blog are on everyones radar - but I think sub-portals would be more innovative and much more in-sync with enhancing a Portal Mod.

Certainly not a suggestion for including in v1.0 nor am I making any claims that existing features are "insufficient" - just an idea to kick around - flames to /dev/null.

Its an interesting feature..though i am a bit unsure on how much TP and even SMF would need to change for it to happen.

TP is geared towards one SMF installation, so if several exist - while it can surely just use the same TP files - TP itself would need some way of knowing which one is "driving"...that would be easier if TP was stand-alone, keeping tabs on x number of SMF sites.

If we rather talking about limiting one SMF into several "pieces" that will , based on what TP will allow through, show only a set of boards, and a set of blocks etc. , then its much more possible. TP can start up earlier than any boards are loaded, and intervene there. The details on how this would be done needs some thought of course, but since we are talking separation, which ultimately is permission-based, it would not add the complexity of multiple-sites with separate full-blown installations.

I am interested in possibly using one prtal site for multiple smf forums.  I think that I read somwhere that you could load multiple forums on one database based on the naming convention.  Any thoughts?

That is a discussion for SMF forums i think.
I have read some similar questions there on SMF forums :)
Dont know if they ever solved it or not

Just looking at BZ and I realised something, Bloc has this working (in Manuscript if not others)

http://www.tinyportal.net/smf/index.php?action=collapse;c=4;sa=expand#4

and also has his + and - shrink buttons. The action above is the one activated by the name of the board. If you had an action that would load one board, with its forums, instead of all boards and use that with the + & - buttons, there is no loss of functionality. Using/adapting the TP feature of only viewing some blocks with specific boards, you have something much better suited to TP (as a TP mod?) than just SMF.

So what you are saying is that the TP home page is multiple SMF forums tied into a single TP page at the front?  If so, that is exactly what i am looking for.  I am assuming that all of the forums are in the same domain.

Thanks for your help.

this site is a BIG hybrid i guess :)
Im sure Bloc have a big "side" coding to this site then we know about, but thats for him to answer :)

Sorry, no, I'm not saying it is. I'm saying that TP could be and would be a better way than just as a mod to SMF. If an action can be created, so can extra buttons to call the action.

This site has only 2 "outside" functions, thats the Themeshop and the Bugtracker. The rest is either TP or the Bz11 theme. :)

Noko, do you mean an action to automatically expand the "mini-site" boards/category and collapse the rest?

In this scenario it would be quite possible to let TP go inbetween and sort out the boards that don't belong, keeping tabs of which category "own" which "mini.-site".The categories could be the actually "mini-sites" in fact.

Or simply add "super-categories" from TP.

I just noticed the Bugtracker, very cool!   :coolsmiley:
