what directory go the language files?

themes/default/languages with the rest of the english language files

i suppose portuguese files goes in the portuguese directory then, is it right?

No, you put all the language files in with the english ones in the /Themes/default/languages/
you have to create language specific image folders though, and copy over the forum and portal images from the english folder to your own made language folder.
So just the images need to have a language specific folder.

If you have all the language images made in your own language (forum buttons etc) you upload them in to your specific image language folder

Themes/default/images/english
Themes/default/images/your language here/

uk4jesus TP language files use the same directories as SMF language files, both installed by FTP not package  ;)

Just in case, SMF language files can be found in http://www.simplemachines.org/download/?languages

You will see there
