Article categories are placeholders for articles which will make it easier to navigate and work with them. When you create a category you enter a name for it and select if that category should be a sub-category of another one. This way you can create a simple system of article topics.

When you have created one, it will appear in the category listing screen. Here you can change the name, the  parent category ( if any)  and also add a link to a category icon. Thats any image file you want to use, and that image will effectively be shown to the left inside every article belonging to this category.
